If the gov can bail out AMD (or anybody) like they did with Ford or GM, then I will buy 1000 shares of AMD right now, and possibly more later.

I think you are both forgetting the fact that Intel effectively choked them out of virtually all OEM's during that time period that AMD out performed them. That crippled their revenue which in turn will cause their R&D. Yes they are to blame for over hyping the processors that came after that time period, but there is no denying that what Intel did had a devastating effect on their ability to compete with performance. AMD's lack of ability to fire back even to this day with any sort of pressure has just dug them even deeper into the hole. They are stuck in a situation where they need something absolutely ground breaking, their hoping is HSA, for them to be able to bounce back.

If they fall it will have a disastrous effect on consumers. Keep in mind I run Intel. I just root for the underdog and pray for competition.

Intel is by no means the sole reason for AMD's fall, but their contribution to it is a pretty large one.

Wait a day or two, it might be the second stock I buy after I bought NVDA when it was at 13, then it went to 10. doh.gif

You guys are too worried, they've got a lot of stuff coming out soon, kind of like being in the Apple computers since Apple is switching over, new mobile chips, 8xxx series next year, it's not just about CPU's
post #47 of 203
Yeah I was really thinking with all the AMD hardware in the next gen consoles they would be good to go. I guess profit margins are very low on that sort of thing because of the volume.

It's easy to see why Intel has been so successful. They came up with a game plan for managing progress and advancement. Think about it; Tick-Tock has been going full steam. Think what you want, but it has been working. Intel has also been weary of dangerous advancements and not overextending itself. The PC/laptop market has been its safe spot, and any movement into other markets hasn't been an all-or-nothing approach.

AMD has done the opposite, taking a more risky approach, and attempting to take on too much at one time. Everything from the Bulldozer debacle to the overpriced purchase of ATI. BD was a cool an innovative idea, but it was too much. Not only did it not meet expectations, but it put AMD nearly a year behind Intel. Now we see it all over again with Steamroller not seeing the light of day until at least 2014. The graphics side of business seems to bring in a steady paycheck, but lets face it; AMD paid way too much from the get-go, and the purchase has yet to really pay off.

I hate to see this; we need AMD. Here's hoping things turn around, and they can get back in the game. ARM might keep things competitive in the low-end or mobile arena, but they have no real incentive to move into the server/PC market.

Intel has only been successful recently. AMD will get ahead and history will repeat itself.
The GPU side of AMD still brings in less profit than the CPU side. I like AMD's approach to the GPU's though, 6 different GPU's is enough.

They do not need a bailout at this point. At least they did not get as low as Sharp did where they absolutely needed a bailout.

why would sharp get bailed out by the US? arnt they Japanese?
