Battlefield 3 low gpu usage

Hey guys. I am new to oc.net. I have the following issue.

I have a fairly old system

q8400 2.667GHz
4gb ddr2 800MHz Ram
ATI HD 4850 DDR3 512mb

This system is around two and a half years old and I play games on 1440*900 resolution(native resolution).
I am facing a problem in Battlefield 3.
I know that BF3 requires the latest and the greatest systems but don't just start bashing me please.
First hear me out.

Playing at all low settings I get 15-25 fps in BF3 multiplayer. Fine, I accept that its a fairly old system but then my friend who has an 8800 gt graphics 512 mb with c2d 8400 and 4gigs ram can run the game at all low settings with no problems. He averages at around 50 fps.
We both play at same resolutions and got our systems nearly at the same time.

I can run bf3 sp very smooth at around 50-60 fps with fairly high settings (AUTO settings). But multiplayer gives horrendous frame drops and very low average framerate(around 22 fps).

Why does an NVIDIA 8800gt run the game on all low settings very smoothly while my card is around 55-60% load.?(8800 gt is around 100% load) while playing the game.

Can I do anything to increase the gpu usage in bf3? This happens only in BF3 multiplayer. Rest of the multiplayer games run smooth.

Please don't suggest me to get a new pc or components. I can't. Just not now. Maybe I'll upgrade next year after the next gen graphics come out and current gen get a lil cheaper.

Thanks.

Umm.. Sorry for the typo. My friend's game averages around @40 fps with max 50 fps.

I can't speak for BF3 personally but I have the GPU usage issue with Crysis 1. I will be getting 80-90 FPS in some areas with 90% GPU usage but when I turn around it may be 40 FPS with 50% gpu usage.

OMG overclock that CPU!!!
also watch v-ram usage, find the bf3.exe and go into properties and disable desktop composition. This will free up v-ram when you play BF3. BF3 multiplayer requires CPU power as well, You should see what clocks your friend runs his at. all your extra cores will do nothing if your core clock is to low.

So it seems that either the game isn't optimized for lower end ATI cards OR it is ati who doesn't release good drivers for the game?

Anyway. Are there any settings or configurations which I can apply to increase the gpu usage either GC configuration or game's config.

It seems that the game isn't that good optimized for the lower end cards because I have seen people running Warfighter MOH (which is based on same frostbite 2.0 engine ) very smooth with HD 4850.

Thanks, I realize that what you said pretty much holds true. MY friend runs his C2D8400 @ 3.2 GHz by default and I run q8400 @ 2.667 default. That must be the difference factor. I recently tried to overclock my CPU by watching a youtube video but the I reverted it coz it started crashing my computer. I'll read OClking guides on this site and try and overclock my CPU again.

It's not a cut and dry situation when comparing your system to the next guys so don't worry about your buddies' system fttb. It's not useful.

The issue I see is a 775 quad at 2.6GHz. Certainly in multiplayer, it's twice as (if not more) CPU intensive compared to single player. Start at the CPU and overclock it if you can.

Would be nice to know the motherboard your working with. If you have a p45 board getting a decent clock out if it should be pretty easy. My old ud3p once pushed my Q9550 to 4.25, though now it only sits @ 4ghz. Don't expect those that type of speed out of your CPU if you have a normal board, but 3.4-3.8 should be doable. I just hope your not running a 750i or 780i board, they suck at OCing 45nm quads. I know my old evga 780i board couldnt get my q9550 past 3.4ghz stable, something my ud3p could get up to 4.25.
