SSD vs HDD..where do I put my programs?

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
Good day,
Just found your forum while searching the net smile.gif I just recently bought a new computer (HP Phoenix h9-1183) which has 16 GB RAM, Intel core i7-3770, CPU-3.50GHZ, Windows 7 (home), SSD (99.2 GB) and 1 HDD (2TB). I am not a gamer, but do a lot of work with video and slideshow productions (hobby). I started re-loading some of my programs on the SSD and poof..it was almost filled. I had to go back and set everything back to factory settings and re-locate my user files (pictures, documents, music, video etc.) to the E: drive. I spoke to two different computer techs where I bought my computer and one told me just to go ahead and load my programs( Adobe Creative Suite 6 Production Premium, Bluff Titler, Pinnacle Studio etc. etc.) right on to the E: drive which has 2TB. The other guy told me that I should load my programs on the SSD drive to monopolize performance, etc. and that there should be enough room as my user files, recycle bin, etc. were relocated and removed from the C: drive (SSD). I would prefer to put them on the E: drive which has more space, and then I was thinking that maybe I should put some of my programs on the SSD dive, but I am in a quandary and just don't know what to do. I have even thought about going out and buying a bigger SSD (looked at the 256 GB (Vertx, Agility or Crucial M4 or even the Seagate Momentum XT which is 750 GB) all which are at affortable prices for me ($200+). But if I don't have to replace the SSD I won't. The machine is just 2 weeks old and I really don't want to dish out any more money. So, what should do? Put everything on the E: drive as originally planned or do a mixture (SSD plus E:) Get a new SSD?
Thanks for any suggestions that you can give me!!!

Mix them, put your most used programs and a few larger one's you want to load fast on the SSD, then anything else can go on the HDD. I have a 128gGB SSD where I put dev tools and stuff, games and pictures etc. on the HDD.

Yeah.... Programs should be on SSD.

Download and run WinDirStat to understand what is utilizing up space.

One thing you should do is disable hibernation since that is eatting up 16GB of space for a feature that is not that important on a desktop.
Once again...

Welcome!
100gb is kinda enough for your hobby.
Put windows, and all your program on you ssd to load like a boss.
Put every data like video and picture on your HDD.
I also read that is good for a SSD to have 10% free space ( so in your case that would be 10gb free)

Keep that 100gb man your program should all fit in there, if not put the most important and the heavier one. Small apps also load fast on HDD.

You can look at this guide for maximization : http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdds

You should have plenty of room with a 64GB SSD for all/almost all of your program...let a lone a 100GB one.

Programs -> SSD

Data -> HDD.

Disable hibernation, shrink page file if you can or move it to a HDD if need be.
post #6 of 9
JustFYI if you were to getaanother SSD, you can have both in your system, perhaps using the 128GB split into 2 partitions with a 64GB partition as a cache drive for the HDD and the (Samsung 830 256GB ismy ssuggestion) for OS and the video editing programs. Keep the saved files/videos on HDD, and if you do a setup like above, theccurrent projects would be loaded into the SSD cache so you would essentially get the best of both worlds. The extra partition could be used for a scratch drive or anything else you might want.

Just a suggestion.

Wow! Thanks for your suggestions! Sean and others, I followed your suggestions and removed hibernation, reduced shrink page file etc. and now have 75.6 gb free on SSD. I am thinking of going for a second SSD or just replacing it with a bigger one. I don't have windows disk as my PC came preloaded and I had to create the recovery disks, so I'm not sure if I can use these and load my computer with the factory, preloaded programs/OS onto a new SSD. I am going to the computer store tonight to see what they might have to say.
Thanks!! smile.gif

Sorry that I haven't been back on line for a bit. I had 35 reports to write and was working all evenings and week-ends. I had no time for anything..hence my computer sits waiting for me to load it with programs. I talked to the guy at the computer store and he said to load all programs on my data HD and just cache to the C:drive. I am on a beta forum and I asked there how to load their program and I was told to put it all the C: drive that it uses up 150-250mg. They also suggested to try putting it on the E: drive and if possible to cache the styles, transitions to the C: drive in the ProgramData (hidden folder), but they did not know how that would work out or to load it on the C: deive and try moving the prgramData files. Yikes, I don't know enough about the internal workings of computers to know what to do..truthfully, how do I create a cache file folder to put cache files..?

Just load it all to your main SSD. That's simplest. Keep the big crap like Docs/Pics/etc. on your hard drive, and keep pagefile over there too.

If you run out of space, you have two options - move something to HDD, or upgrade your SSD.

Upgrading is trivially simple. Grab EaseUS Free and use the "Clone Disk" option with the new/old SSD plugged in. It does it all for you. Then you shutdown, swap ports, and once you've verified everything fired up off the new drive, you erase the old SSD from Disk Management and now have a spare for whatever you want.

http://download.cnet.com/Easeus-Todo-Backup-Free/3000-2242_4-10964460.html

Moving something is also quite easy. First install Link Shell, and then make sure the thing to be moved isn't open.

http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshellext/hardlinkshellext.html

Move the folder to your HDD. (I did this for my Steamapps folder - I installed Steam to SSD, moved \steamapps to HDD) Once there, right-click it and 'Pick Link Source', then right-click in the original location and 'Drop As -> Symbolic Link' - it'll appear to be in both locations, while actually being stored on the HDD. That avoids breaking any registry crud. thumb.gif
