After Over 20 years, Switching to Intel

Well Vishera just doesn't do it for me. I usually do a lot of reading before I buy anything and I have picked out a couple of items (I only need board & chip. I have a 1TB HDD, two 120GB SSD's and a cooler, case, PS, DVD & BLu-ray).

ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293

Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4000 BX80637I53570K

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504

Ok, I have not read much about these other than Ivy Bridge is the newer architecture on the 22nm process and causes a lot more heat than Sandy. As for the Z77 chipset where does it stand as in newest or best chipset. Also, should I even go with a LGA 1155 board?

I'm switching because the AM3+ socket pretty much ends at Vishera for current upgrades from a X4 955 and a 3570k is pretty close to a Vishera 8350 but I can get the 3570K cheaper if I can get someone to pick me up one at a Microcenter. I'm gonna trust someone to ship me one and maybe even the board.

I just bought two G.Skill 8GB 1866 sticks of RAM which should arrive tomorrow. I am going to use them on my 955 rig to get 16GB for now even though they won't clock 1866. I'm going to sell the Asrock 890GX Pro3, 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws 1333 and the 955 with the stock cooler. My rig is in my signature. Don't know if I will outright sell it or build it and try to make a little more.

The board has onboard HDMI and I have a case and PS and a HDD to go in it and that will pay for the upgrade, but with the 3570K I will be getting Vishera performance with upgrades already available. I just can't see buying a Vishera and being already "stuck". I want to yearly or so upgrade.

I am dumb as a rock about Intel so you will not offend me if you tell me those are crap choices. I only read a little before I decided I BETTER ask. A little reading for me is 3 or 4 hours.

You are all set to jump from the AMD ship. Great choices!

Thanks guys. I try to do my own research because you learn things along the way. I forgot, what does it take to do Widi?

Onboard Graphics was needed because I have it now and for the next upgrade. I can keep my video card and sell the board, CPU and RAM. Right now I use the onboard HDMI to go to the HDTV and my 6870 runs my main monitors, a 20" and 24", so I can stream to the TV without using any of the 6870 resources. How will a 6870 work with the 3570K and the Intel graphics? Same as now?

I'm also going to run Linux on this so is anyone running Linux on this board and how is the driver situation?

I feel it is an about equal choice. If its slower clock per clock, but seems to run cooler, and clock better. I feel how they clock is more regular and expectable.

3570k is better obviously but a 2500k for $100 is hard to turn down.

I just made the same upgrade last monday. I have the same video card as you only i have 2 of them and i can see a huge difference in gaming. In games that use 2 cores my fps doubled. You will be very happy with your choice.
Worse than crack.
