ASUS Crosshair V Formula - Problems loading Windows 7

This is a "Headsup" and a solution to a problem I have noticed other posts on elsewhere. I had the problem and it took me two days to find a solution which is below.

Problem: I built a new system with a ASUS Crosshair V Formula motherboard two weeks ago. When I started the system up for the first time the bios "saw" my USB mouse and keyboard and both worked in the bios screen. However when I started loading Windows 7 professional 64 bit, the system stopped "Seeing" both the mouse and keyboard early in the program loading process. This made it impossible to complete loading Windows 7 as I could not click on the "I agree" or "next" buttons. I tried numerous keyboards and mice looking for a solution. The ASUS CH V F motherboard only has one legacy round plug which can be used for either a mouse or keyboard but not both at once. This means that one can either use that plug for the mouse when loading the OS and then unplug the mouse and plug in the keyboard as needed to load the OS or find another solution. Note: Unpluging a mouse and pluging in a keyboard into a computer while it is powered up is not recomended.

Explanation: Windows 7 when initially installing apparently does not recognize devices, mouse and or keyboard, pluged into USB3 plugs until the opererating system is almost fully loaded, This is inspite of the fact the mouse and keyboard are USB 2 devices. Windows 7 does recognize USB 2 devices, mouse and keyboard, pluged into legacy USB 2 plugs while installing the OS. Note: This limitation is NOT in the Microsoft database apparently.

Solution: There are two legact USB-2 plugs on the ASUS Crosshair V Formula motherboard. These are NOT the two USB plugs next to the round keyboard/mouse legacy plug. They are lower down in the motherboard and a different color. (check the manual to find them) use these two plugs when installing the OS and all should go well.

Hope this helps.

If you can find another explanation I would be very interested to know. It is perfiectly possible that my analysis of the problem is at least at part in error. I did try several different keyboard and mouse combinations at least 4 of each, both wireless and wired and these included both Microsoft and Logitec keyboards and mice as well as no name ones. In all cases the ASUS bios would recognize the keyboard and mouse even though the Windows 7 professional 64 bit install program with not. I was loading from a newly purchased genuine Windows 7 disk.
