I am sure there are many other "distros" with pros & cons.

So far it's been 4 years since I installed Linux for the first time. I have tried all versions of Ubuntu since 8.10
and I can tell you that it's quite solid, easy to install and to learn with since there's plenty of documentation in the internet.

Although we use Windows for almost everything, the experience gained in Ubuntu let me setup a backup PDC & file server using a 10 year old computer and Ubuntu server. It works like a charm so I will be adding services (FTP server, VPN, etc.). This is to say that your move to explore Linux is a smart one.

Good luck!

There are a few guides out there for making a bootable USB version of Ubuntu. the nice thing about Ubuntu's desktop installer is taht it includes a "LiveCD" mode. You can Ubuntu in memory right off the CD/DVD/USB without changing your system at all. There are also ways of getting a USB installer's LiveCD portion to be persistent between boots as well.

You could also just install Linux directly to a USB drive with no other hard drives plugged in and right the GRUB boot to the USB, then chnge the boot order in BIOS to load USB drives first.

Straight forward answer:
  • I do recommend you start with Ubuntu
  • Yes, you can try Ubuntu without installing it
  • Yes, you can create a bootable USB (persistent) (See this)

Again, good luck!

Ultimately, it's going to depend on the distro you pick.

If trying without installing, an ISO is ~ 700MB.

If you want to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS or 12.10 to your USB stick, I think 4.4GB space is needed.
