Need a new MP3 Player

I have been using my SGS 2 with an Fiio E6 and the stereo jack just died. I'm thinking of just getting a good mp3 player with a built in amp to power some iM716s. They are rated for 68 ohms.

I'm looking for a pure flat response (maybe) in the DAC with a good soundstage and stereo crosstalk, supports .flac, an sd or microsd card, and has a built in amp good enough for these IEMs. Any good suggestions? Suggestions can be in any budget; I want to know my options. Did not like the soundstage from the Sandisk Clip Plus.

I'm leaning towards the Hi-Fi Man HM601...

Avoid. Like. The. Plague.

Why don't you just Rockbox your Clip+?
It's got a soundstage width setting....

I did rockbox it and even at 200 percent on the settings dial it didn't sound as wide as the sgs II. What's wrong with the HM601?

I don't want to get something that needs an external headphone amp either, as most players don't have a proper line out, so you end up powering the amp and losing a bit of clarity to the output. That's what I noticed with the fiio e6 at least, and reading around. It may not be loud enough, but out the headphone jack alone sounds clearer then with the e6.

Not that many options, are there? I would like to keep the budget around 300, but it really comes down to the idea of getting something that works right, the first time, and not want to upgrade down the road. Plus there isn't much info out there for the other players, I find. I can't seem to find a lot of technical documentation of some of the players. Reviews don't really cut it for me for sound anymore, too much personal bias or opinion on sound that they "like". I know what signature that I'm looking for in the output.

{edit:}

I'm looking at that newer Sony player, the Z1060, but don't know much about it's output power, nor the DAC other then it might be whatever comes with the Tegra 2, which I've read is decent. No SD card, but the 32GB model is a fair price at around 240.

There is also the Cowon X9.

I wanted to grab the Flo S2 or whatever, but I don't know what shipping is like, nor if those over sea retailers are trustable. That would be my ideal player, I thinks?

That's it's a horrid pile of ...... that measures horribly on every RMAA test. Yes, RMAA is flawed but it ain't flawed enough to counter the horrible readings.
It's borderline scam material.

Enjoy

Proper electrical engineering design (the Sansa Clip+) vs. the borderline scam / 'design by ear'

That's not even factoring in the joke of the user interface it is.
Really, as the OCN Audio Editor, I have the moral responsibility to basically, not recommend shoddy products.

Man, that is horrible. I admire your standards, good sir! Cheers for the info man.

Outside the Clip+, what else do you suggest?

the problem is that many DAPs / 'mp3 players' don't have strong internal amps because the vast majority of earphones are of high sensitivity.

Tbh, it's just a lot easier and more cost effective upgrading your earphones to one that has a wide spacious soundstage and is high sensitivity, such as the Sennheiser IE8 / IE80.

Those wouldn't really be an upgrade imo. I really like these. The detail and balance is excellent when the seal is good; and these seem to have just the right amount of soundstage that I prefer. I haven't heard great things about the IE 80s.

Which DAPs do?

The DAC in the SGS 2 is not all that impressive, so upgrading to 300 dollar IEMs when I really have ones that cost 150-200 (got them on sale for 50, though), isn't too cost effect imo when I'm not that impressed with the Clip+ to begin with. I live up in Canada, btw. Audio equipment is usually much more expensive here then down south.

I found the z1060 on sale and grabbed it (32GB). It is suppose to sound better then the flo 2, let alone, it's the same as the X1060. Can't wait.

Mr. Kiwi, audio editor extraordinaire, I know you realize that ellipses in place of a word that can be interpreted as foul language still counts as foul language. I suggest you read up on the TOS. teaching.gif
