[WinSuperSite, Tech Report] Updated - Windows 8 Sales Well Below Projections - Page 18

I don't think metro is faster to use, just different. That's the part I like. Feels like something entirely new as opposed to the old way of doing things which hasn't really changed anything since 1995. I guess according to some of you MS should just stop at Win7 and keep making that forever.... rolleyes.gif

If windows 8 had an innovative on-screen keyboard which is *easier* to use instead of a physical keyboard, then for sure, I would switch to windows 8 because I would love to type fast with an on-screen keyboard. I thought the original purpose of windows was to be "user friendly"? How is windows 8 more user friendly than windows 7?

No, Muttro isn't going to die, because it actually does work for tablets. As more and more computers are sold in that form factor, then Windows 8 will be successful.

It does need to die as a desktop OS, though.

When Microsoft introduced Windows 95, it gave users the option to reactivate the old Windows 3.1 UI by changing the shell from Explorer back to Program Manager, which was still included as part of the OS. You got all of the under-the-hood improvements of Win95 and still got to use the interface you wanted to use. They should have done the same thing here. What they did instead is an Apple-esque tactic.

While I personally love the metro UI and apps, it really doesn't make any sense why MS wouldn't have given users the option to turn it off if they wanted the old desktop in Win8. Especially considering that beneath the metro interface is basically just a tweaked Win7 desktop with no start button. That would have made everyone happy...

IMHO, metro is great for a tablet or touchscreen laptop. It feels awkward on a desktop though. What I think Windows really needs though is a total overhaul. Over the years, additions and maintaining backwards compatability has turned it into a convoluted mess. Why does there need to be 3 API's? (COM, .NET, METRO), or two program files directories when hardly anyone uses 32 bit systems anymore? Applications install themselves all over the place with registry edits, program files folders, System32 DLLs, and user temp directories. It's difficult to find settings in the mess that is the Control Panel if you don't already know exactly where they are.

If it were up to me, I would remove the global registry, or at least restrict access to only a small list of developers. The rest can use local application settings. The file system would be simplified. Support for outdated systems would be dropped (No more 32 bit support). DLL use would be discouraged, as space is hardly an issue anymore, making them more trouble then they are worth. Control Panel would be removed and reworked in something new that is more intuitive. COM support would be dropped. Holdover conventions, like an A and B drive, would be removed. It's drastic, but catering to outdated conventions and programs can only go on for so long.

I agree. My problem with Win7 isn't that it is a bad Windows. It's just that I am tired of the same basic format since 1995. I want something entirely new but still trustworthy and supported (i.e. NOT Linux).

Windows 7 is just that -- it's good enough that most people don't feel the need to upgrade at all, especially to something that's going to feel different (at least from what I've seen).
Then of course there's also the "recent" trend for Windows where one iteration sucks while the next one turns out to be good (hint: Vista >> 7). Obviously that doesn't help Microsoft at all.
** Yes, there were problems with XP and such, but the majority will know Vista being abysmal due to lots of negative publicity. **
If anything I, and a bunch of people that I know, were super excited about 7. But 8? Can really care less. And I'm sure the majority think the same way.
Just my two cents!
I hear ya there, there is absolutely no reason for windows 8 right now. I have 5 free copies of Win 8 available tgo me via my companies TechNet account and I haven't touched a single copy as I see no need for it on any of my desktops, and yes I did use it for 3 months on a company laptop. Showed it to the family and fiancee and none of them want anything to do with it even when they knew I could get it free for them. Maybe if I pickup a tablet PC later down the road I'll grab a copy for it.

I hazard a guess most of us just want a 1st party option for an actual start menu, even if it was very like Metro with differences to make it work better on desktops and laptops.

Can I just blame others when I can't accomplish what I set out to do? It seems so much easier.

Sorry MS, I don't like tiles or metro or whatever you want to call it. I realize you guys needed something completely different from what iOS and android offers but tiles of various shapes and colors are just not going to do it for me.
