Samsung is planning to start mass production of smartphone screens using bendable plastic rather than glass. The WSJ's Yun-Hee Kim talks about Samsung's experiment with flexible technology and why this can lower costs.

It's not really a launch. It's more like an announcement.
An announcement that Samsung will start mass producing flexible displays by H1 2013. That's pretty far from "launching flexible cell phones".

Personally I'm more excited for flexible monitors / TVs. There isn't really much point to such a screen on a small, touch-input, mobile device.

the PCB can be encased in white aluminum, would use less battery for white images.

What? If this helps making smartphones more crash resistant, THEN I am in.

The main reason why I didn't got in the smartphone wagon is because its shame to have a hundred Euros gadget destroyed when hitting something by accident, like falling into the floor.

It makes more sense to me to unveil this technology in a tablet as opposed to a smartphone. The latter is so small the viewing difference is minimal. A flexible tablet however, could provide an added measure of privacy for an individual doing corporate business work in public. I can see how the internals of a tablet would make this harder, but I see flexible smartphones as more of an enthusiast level device as opposed to a serious product.
