Is a 90W PSU enough for a 3570K? - Page 3

i think it would be enough. my i3 2120 + gtx 670 was idling at around 30-35w and I've read the power consumption between i3 vs. i5 isn't even that far even tho it has 50% more cores.



yes that's an i3 2120 + gtx 670 not a small light LED bulb thumb.gif

and with an 90w power supply at worst you'd expect aouind 110w+ straight from wall because of the 20% efficiency. the PSU will do fine. intel cpu's are so efficient these days

Once again, I've said it. You are cutting it extremely close. I would leave some room for energy fluxing. You don't want to bottom out the PSU for you will run into HUGE issues with the life and dependency of the PSU. Good luck.

I'm just going to stick with what I said. Is it lower than 77w, sure, absolutely. The 90w will in all likelyhood be just fine, especially when undervolted, but in my opinion would be better suited for a slightly larger psu.

I actually ended up going with a 5400 RPM Scorpio Blue (since the main drive is an SSD and the second drive is just for data storage), so that will save a bit of power on the hard drive front.

I ended up getting the ISK 110 after all. This system isn't going to be used for folding or anything like that, and it will never be used to run Prime95 or Linpack for hours on end.

Thanks for the info. Any chance you could measure your i3 system with the CPU under full load and the GPU idle?

Btw, that 28.7W number is from the wall, right? So the actual system is idling at only 22-25W?

I would have to say no. the mobo itself takes some power, RAM takes power, SSD/HDD takes some power, fan's take power, add them all together and you have a "max load" of greater then 90W. you wouldn't normally draw anywhere near that amount of power, but when you build a box, you build it with max load in mind.(plus alittle buffer)

what are you building this box for that require a 3570k to drive it?

It doesn't absolutely require a 3570K. But with the Microcenter deal, I am paying the same price for a 3570K + mobo as I would for a slower CPU + board. Plus the 3570K has the much better HD 4000 graphics which is not found in the slower Ivy Bridge chips.

I did some more research and it seems that people have built 2500K systems in this case successfully before, so I think it will be fine. Worst case scenario is that I buy a more powerful Pico-PSU for the build and spend an extra $50 or so, which isn't terrible.

The SSD takes about 4 watts under load, the HDD a similar amount. There's only 1 fan in the entire system, and the 30nm Samsung RAM I bought for this system runs at 1.35V. So I think it will be fine in the end, especially considering the 3570K is more power efficient than the 2500K.

Oh trust me, it will never be used for folding, Prime95, etc. It wouldn't really make sense to build an ITX box for folding anyway biggrin.gif

It will be more of a media-center type of system, so I don't anticipate the CPU being at 100% load very often.
