I cannot decide which to go for!

Hey guys and girls,

Recently I decided to improve my in-progress battlestation by swapping my 15€ Microsoft membrane keyboard for something mechanical - something real.

After having done some reasearch, I think the Filco Majestouch-2 Ninja TKL with cherry mx browns and the Topre Realforce 88UB fit my expectations very well. Although both seem to have excellent build quality, given the fact they're both Japanese products, Topre seem to enjoy more whorshipping.

I must admit that I am the kind of guy that gets bored with peripherals (especially gaming peripherals) relatively quick and tend to return the old for the new. But both keyboards are not available in Germany, so I have to import one from the UK.

For my upcoming battlestaion I desired a professional-looking and compact (TKL) keyboard, which will only serve me as my typewriter so to speak. Gaming will be done with a game pad like e.g. the Razer Nostromo or the Logitech G13.

So which of these do you suggest? Which do you think will set and accompany me for the rest of my life, haha?
Neither 185€ (Filco, VAT, shipping) nor 275€ (Topre, VAT, shipping) do I consider a low-cost investment.

Giving it a thorough thought, I concluded that a Topre is definately one beautiful piece of keyboard but definately beyond my possibilities right now.

I have decided to go for a cherry mx brown switch instead. I want a small form factor keyboard (tenkeyless at least), ideally backlit and professionally looking. The ones I have found fitting my desires are as following:

- Filco Majestouch 2 Ninja Tenkeyless
- Ducky Shine 2 Tenkeyless (Blue LED)
- KBT Pure (Blue LED)

Can you please tell me how these compare to each other build quality wise? IMO Filco looks the sturdiest.

I would prefer a German ISO layout (which is only possible with the Filco right now, AFAIK) but do absolutely not mind an US ANSI layout, though.

p.s.:
I wrote on Ducky's FB wall saying I'd love to see an ISO Ducky to which they responded they would look for a German distributor. Now shall I wait?

So far,

I like Topre keys over everything else by a fair amount. It's more expensive but worth it in my opinion. Topre is a good long-lasting investment.

I do prefer them in white instead of black though, and be sure that a black-on-black or "ninja" layout is what you want before purchasing it. (I have a blank white HHKB2-S and love it, but it might take a bit of practice)

Do you want to make a purchase and be confident of your decision, or do you want to buy a keyboard that you like, but wonder if maybe you made the right choice by going with brown instead of blue/black/red etc.

Yes, this is perfect. It looks clean, professional and stealth yet maintains the letters, in case I need to look at it.

Quality wise it goes like this:

1. Filco Majestouch 2 Ninja Tenkeyless
2. Ducky Shine 2 Tenkeyless (Blue LED)
3. KBT Pure (Blue LED)

After that it depends on what you want, if you want:

Best Quality -> Filco
Quality Backlit -> Ducky
60% Layout -> Pure

If you don't need the backlighting, don't mind the noise, or need more than 2KRO (fine for typing, not for gaming) the Model M is a great keyboard.
Might be a little awkward on Windows 7 or 8 with the lack of a Windows key though.
