My Micro SD card is corrupt because of best buy. Is there any way to fix it?

Here is my issue. I sold my thunderbolt to bestbuy which they gave me a pretty good amount on a gift card. While bringing the phone to them i told him I needed my 32gb mem card out of the phone because I forgot to take it out. Instead of taking the memory card out correctly by unmounting or shutting the phone off he takes it out and Bam it no longer works.

I am getting a "SD card blank or has unsupported filesystem". I went to bestbuy today because my memory card is messed up with that error and he apologized and he told me that he did not think to take the card out properly so in turn they gave me a brand new 32gb memory card in return.

When placing the memory card in any phone the phone will ask me to format the card so I do but it just goes back to the same error message. Is there a way to uncorrupt the memory card so its usable again? I dont have a card reader in my rig. I thought I could possible put the card in my phone and format it with my phone plugged in but im not sure that works.

What are my options for those who know. They gave me back the old card and told me if i can fix it go ahead but if i cant they did replace it.

I take it there's nothing important on the memory card?

Two methods pop to mind, but both require a card reader. The first is to zero the card fully. If you plug it into a Windows PC, it will probably ask to initialize it and format to NTFS or exFAT. That'll wipe out the partitions already there, and then your phone should be able to reformat it.

The second is by using a Linux LiveCD. (PartedMagic, etc.) You can probably uncorrupt it by invoking the linux filesystem checker - fsck. Someone taught me a trick long ago... although the fsck commands to fix Linux filesystems are a PITA to remember, if you resize a partition it usually invokes them properly. Therefore, resize the partition on your MicroSDHC card to be ~1MB smaller and then afterwards resize it back. It may invoke the necessary commands. thumb.gif

Definitely the first method for 99% of people out there, you should be able to use your phone as a USB card reader just fine, I assume it's an Android based phone which means you should just mount it and it'll act like a card reader in itself even if the phone doesn't understand the filesystem/the card is corrupt. I've actually done this a few times with photos and other things the phone couldn't understand that people have sent me. (Usually stuff for specific apps on iPhones)

ok thanks I will give that a shot. Yes my phone is android. tho I am not sure how I use my phone as a card reader honestly. The problem with my phone is that the phone will not let me mount the corrupt SD card.

USB card readers that will accept microSD cards are dirt cheap these days, have you tried discount stores locally? I got my last one for under $2 and it works perfectly.

I'm serious about checking dollar stores and other discount places. I got my last one from the UK equivalent of Dollar General..

This is great advice. Don't give up until you try this. I've seen so many situations where Windows based Format/Partition Utilities can't fix a problem but booting into Linux and using gparted works.

No just the original 32gb SD card. I took my HTC thunderbolt to bestbuy and they bought only the phone from me. I kept my 32GB SD card while at the store I forgot to take my 32GB card out so the guy took it out for me but upon taking out the card he some how corrupted the SD card which results in a Blank or unsupported file system error now.

I went back into the store after finding testing my 32GB card in my Galaxy S3. After going back to the store he expressed how sorry he was and he said he was in a hurry and he just pulled out the card without the phone off or unmounting the card which some how resulted in the card being corrupted. The bestbuy support manager was not happy and gave me a brand new 32gb PNY card off the shelf even tho my 32gb card was not purchased at bestbuy. Which I was happy of course to geta new 32gb card back which work 100% in my GS3.

Upon walking out of the store the manager walked up to me and gave me the OLD corrupted card back and told me to fix it if i can but if not they are sorry. I figured I would try and fix the card if i can even tho I got a brand new one.
