Building new rig. Go with Ivy or Sandy-E - Page 2

No intention of doing video editing with this rig.
If it helps, what I am thinking of putting in the rig:
CPU - Not sure yet
MOBO - really depends on the CPU
RAM - 8GB or 16GB of RAM (most likely 8 as 16 seems unnecessary) Type will depend on CPU/socket
SSD - Probably a Samsung 830 or 840 for OS and a game or two- 256GB
HDD - not sure but probably a 1GB WD Black for programs, STEAM, etc.
GPU - GTX680 4GB (with posibility of addding a second in the future unless it fits in budget and two is feasible now.
CASE - I would like a CaseLabs case, but may go with a Corsair 800D
PSU - I am guessing that a Corsair 850W would suffice with even 2 GPUs
Monitor 24-27" Not sure which yet
I would actually like to keep it under budget, but can go up to $2k

If adding a second card is a "maybe" then X79 is pointless, X79 is a must if you plan on running 3-4 graphics cards with three monitors. You should make you decision based on what you'll be using it for and how many graphics cards you plan on running, so your choice is simple.

You don't need more than 8GB of RAM for gaming and the Samsung 830 or 840 should give you plenty of space for multiple games using a 256GB SSD. I would recommend Case Labs Merlin, you can customize everything and if you wanted to try water cooling down the road there's room for that to.

You can save a bit of money by getting the 830 Series and put the extra money somewhere else.

Since this is a build for your friend, and from the uses you've already specified I would keep it too a 3570K + Z77 Chipset. The 3930K is ridiculous for what he wants. Spend the money saved from going the 3570K route on a 27" 1440P monitor. Also 8GB of RAM will be more than enough, not to mention an additional 8GB is very easy to add in the future should he decide he wants it.

As for the case Case Labs cases while there great unless your water cooling in them I think there a bit pointless, now if he plans on WC in the future might be worth getting. But you can go much cheaper on the case, monies saved there could go towards a WC setup for later or perhaps larger SSD, depends on your mates storage needs, being a gamer he may want lots of games on it could go with 2*256GB for RAID 0 or a single 512GB SSD, why settle for mechanical if you don't have too.

Just a couple ideas, more feedback as to your friends future plans would be beneficial.

I just got a 3570K + P8Z77-M PRO two days ago.. and I am a little disappointed by the temps (stock freq, undervolted); the main purpose of the upgrade was "better efficiency, better temps, better performance" for a silent rig. Got the first and the last - but with these temps I have to keep the fans up. On the other hand, the performance is great for games and daily stuff.

So, the idea is, if you care for silence, maybe you should consider SB rather than IB.

Otherwise, the 3570K+Z77 is enough I think, and with the money you save, invest in a big fast SSD + 1..2 large HDDs for storage, and a nice display (or two.. or three..) smile.gif

paired with a i7-3770k

I don't see why the UP7 since its meant for extreme overclocking ~ don't see why you try to use all the budget.

Might better put together a great regular rig which will perform just as good for what its gonna be used for.

3570k + UD5H will be plenty. Or the UD4H which just came out.

Or go high-end with G1.Sniper 3 which is meant for gaming.

Why spend 2K on a 3570k or a 3770k if he already got a 2600k@4.6GHz? Go for a beefy 3930K, mostly for the feeling of having a monster sitting beside your desk.

In Post #8 he states that he's building this rig for his friend and not upgrading his own system.

Thread Starter
What I am thinking so far from your input:

CPU - i5-3570K
CPU cooler - H100i
MOBO - still unsure. suggestions welcome
RAM - 8GB RAM G.Skil Ripjaw
SSD - Samsung 830 or 840Pro - 256GB
HDD - 1GB WD Black for programs, STEAM, etc.
GPU - GTX680 4GB (Or the MSI Lightning for better temps)
CASE - Corsair 800D
PSU - Would the Corsair 850W suffice (even 2 GPUs in the future)?
Monitor 24-27" Not sure which yet

I would actually like to keep it under budget, but can go up to $2k

On Newegg this all comes out to about $1700, and I still need a good motherboard, and not including the monitor. Can I get a good 27" monitor for $300 or less?

750W is fine for 680's SLI.

Samsung memory - $39
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096
new 30nm memory, overclocks to 2400+.

Dell U2312HM - $260
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824260055
This is the reference in IPS monitors, has a glossy panel.

WD10EZEX - $85
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236339
Althrough being a Caviar Blue its WD's first single-platter 1TB drive thus its significantly faster than all their other (regular) models (more info here).
