Only playing games with a certain amount of active players

I've got quite an annoying mental issue that I started encountering only a few months ago. For some reason my mind has decided that it's tedious and boring to play games that don't have over X number of active players. For example, I can't bring myself to buy Awesomenauts simply because it, according to Steam's stats page, only has ~2000 active players during a massive sale. This issue spans across all multiplayer games. I don't care about SP games because I won't be playing with anyone else.

The huge pain about the issue is that I have absolutely no idea why I think like this. No clue at all.

Now, my question is how many of you have experienced similar issues?

I don't know that I'd call it an issue, but games with a large player base do tend to be more fun. There's more diversity when playing against random teams.

You should play some Call of Duty or something rolleyes.gif

I believe team fortress 2 still has quite the population, and from what I hear people aren't jerks like on call of duty.

I can understand. Don't want to invest time into a game and earn stuff when the population isn't there. I kinda had that mentality with Rift. Like the game and all but didn't want to keep playing simply because it didn't have the numbers that other MMO's had.

Yeah, I had the same issue with Rift. I really liked the game but the more I played, the more it felt like it was dying and I would've earned all the gear, levels and general achievements for 'nothing'. The reason I started the thread is because I want to see whether this is normal among dedicated gamers.

Sure, I could play a game for 'fun' but all that I achieve ends up seeming pointless and ergo I feel like the game itself is pointless.

Yep, I've played all of the modern CoD games including CoD4. Although the gameplay isn't the greatest you can find, the sheer size of the community is very appealing to me. That's what gets me to buy the new game that's released every year. I suppose the diversity you mention is one of the key factors.

TF2 does indeed seem quite populated but that's one of those games I only play for short, intense bursts - just like Minecraft.
