Help me update my computer.

Thread Starter
Currently this is my system, I upgrade it at the end of the year, every year.

Currently this is what it consists of

CPU : AMD Phenom X4 B45 3.2Ghz, from Athlon III 445 x3

Mobo: Asus M5A78L-M LX, Very good board serves me well for what I do.

RAM: Kingston Hyper-X 2x 2GB sticks 1600Mhz. 4GB.

GPU: Onboard ...

PSU : 500watt

And the rest I'm not looking to upgrade, anything here that you think needs upgrading please tell me, I know for a start I need a good GFX Card, what would be best around £60-85?

Please tell me what I need to upgrade just to keep my computer going, I normally do a bit of gaming, not on insane settings, but I haven't much since I got rid of my old card, GTS250.

Anything I've missed please tell me.

With that budget you can get a 7770 or a 7750. I have a 7770 and it performs in most games very well at max detail settings.

I think I'll get the 7750 because it's uses less power, and they both seem to be powerful cards and have not a massive difference.

Is there anything else I could upgrade, and keep in mind I don't really need an epic PC, just good enough for little gaming, music, general use, you know.

Thanks also.

Naw don't think that there's anything worthwhile upgrading. If you have a 60gb drive laying around you can raid it with your other 60gb one. Then it's doubled the speed which is great for gaming.

Well I've never really understood RAID or took the time to read about it, how can it help for gaming, drive speed?, To be honest I lost interest is PC's a while ago and I'm getting back into it, could you explain how it could be faster?

Cheers mate

When writing data to the drive every second bit gets writen onto the other drive. When data gets read off of the hdds the controller (a 8 or 16-bit micro-cpu in your chipset) puts those bits back together so it gets again read as data.

Like that you increase read and write performance 2x.

A bit silly example:

1 byte= 10011011

1.hdd: 1,0,1,1,

2.hdd: 0,1,0,1, --> replace the separation commas that I wrote at the 1st hdd with the bits of the 2nd hdd and you get back the byte that I wrote

To do that simply go into your bios, switch sata mode from ide to raid. Make sure that the last port is still on ide since your main boot hdd has to be plugged into it. It has to be plugged into it because you're not reinstalling windows hence you don't have the raid drivers installed required for boot.

Once you are out of the bios and the computer resets continualy press ctrl+f. You should get into the raid conroller bios where you make a raid0 array.

When creating araid 0 array everything gets deleted on the harddrive. This might not work since you didn't install drivers at the windows installation but it's worth a try.
