Temperatures crash computer?

Thread Starter
I've overclocked my i5 3570k to 4.3ghz at 1.28v. I usually leave my computer case open due to it's bad air flow, but decided to see if anything would change with my case on today. Was playing crysis for 30 minutes and it crashed, I opened my case and it was warm inside. I was wondering if temperatures ALONE are enough to crash a game or application (putting aside voltage, I've already found this voltage to be stable, and it's quite HIGH, yeah I got a below average overclocking chip unfortunately......). I'm planning to leave my case open until I buy a case with better airflow if temperature is causing my games to crash so quickly.

Just the game crashed or the computer? I'm pretty sure that if temps pass Tj Max by a certain amount it will shut down.

Of course heat can and will crash/shutdown a system. rolleyes.gif Components are designed this way to try and keep systems alive when ID 10 T errors occur.

ID 10 T errors are what happens when people do things like overclock without keeping temps under control.

Some call them idiot instead of ID 10 T biggrin.gif

What case do you have now?

i went to check my event viewer, and all it stated was Application error, with event id of 1000:
Faulting application name: Crysis2.exe, version: 1.9.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000
Faulting module name: Crysis2.exe, version: 1.9.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x003cada2
Faulting process id: 0x1024
Faulting application start time: 0x01cdc616caffe740
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis 2\bin32\Crysis2.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis 2\bin32\Crysis2.exe
Report Id: 59990d1a-320c-11e2-a89f-3085a99390ad

Suprisingly, no WHEA errors occured, so my overclock IS stable (I haven't gotten any WHEA errors ever since I found my stable voltage and overclock.) Investigating more I'm guessing you are right, it must be reaching a max and shutting down Crysis 2, or possibly it was just the game, but I am betting it on the heat for now, I didn't experience any shutdown with Crysis when I had my case off with better cooling.

What case do you have now?

I ran crysis again, and with the case on it gets dangerously to the 90's, about 10-15 degrees more......I have an Ultra Ultra X-Blaster Mid-T Case. I do have a hyper 212 evo for my cpu and 3 fans running, but there isnt enough ways for air to get in or get out with this case. Just thought I'd experiment with it on today, bad idea I guess.

EDIT: Disregard that, posted before I saw you had a Hyper 212+.

But you can play around with the idea of delidding. Some people have wonderful results from that and I bet that would save your overclock in that case. Some get 20+ degree difference from before and after. Just a thought.

I would definitely return your CPU to stock clocks until you can buy a case that can deliver the amount of airflow that you need. Or you should just mod your case and make additional slots for fans.

haha no that's ok. My temps on the cpu are actually fine with my case off, it never goes above 70 in gaming. It's just with my case on that heats up the entire computer. Any cases anybody would reccomend that has great airflow? (fans on top of the case also)

I use an Azza Solano 1000R. Has a 230mm intake fan on the side towards the MB, 230 mm exhaust fan on top, two 140mm intake fans on front, and 120mm exhaust fan on back. I'm watercooled so it doesn't really matter to me but it still has great airflow. You could also try to pick up an H100 or something for it.

*Pull lower 3x of your 5.25 front bay covers and replace with an intake fan and filter.
http://www.overclock.net/t/1037539/intake-fan-in-a-5-25-bay-warning-graphics
*Remove all unused PCI slot covers.
*Clip out the back vent grille with a sharp set of side-cutters and make sure back exhaust fan moves as much air as 3bay intake.

Put side cover back on and I'm betting your temps will stay down.

Adding a pull fan on the back 212 will give you 1-2c, maybe 3c max traditional cooling.

After doing that hopefully you will have the modding bug and can continue by putting vents in top and bottom panels and put 40-50mm casters on bottom for ease of moving but mainly for airflow to bottom intake. Get a magnetically attaching filter (Silverstone) with a string tired on one corner you can grab easily to pull it off and clean without having to turn case on it's side.
