Optical Mice [Deathadder 3.5g] Black/White Surface?

Dear Overclock.net,

Today I come to you with a question regarding mousing surfaces. I am currently using a Razer DA BE on a Puretrak Talent Original. I am purchasing a new Puretrak due to wear on the pad, should I go for the black or white? I could also stick to the original, but I've heard that the pattern may not be so good for tracking.

In my experience it is not really the color of the pad that causes DA problems but pattern changes , so like logo ridden mousepads would be a no go. Should be fine with either black or white. Anyone feel free to correct me if they have technical data or something lol.

The black will have a higher lift off distance. So if you want it to be lower go for the white. I don't know how much of a difference the two Talents will have. My guess would be that the lift off distance would lower about 0.6mm. So let's say that the DeathAdder has a 3.8mm lift off distance on black cloth. Subtract 0.6mm from that.

The problem is that the white Talent has the huge logo across it. That would be a deal breaker for me. The regular Talent already has a pattern on it that it shouldn't.

My suggestion would be to get the regular Talent if you are going to buy that pad. Ultimately a pad with a uniform surface would be best.

There was a post I saw by a Mad Catz representative explaining that the laser doesn't see color as you do, what they see is more texture, and reflectiveness of a surface, i.e. glossy vs non glossy.

So a mouse might track well on one flat black pad and not another.

My deathadder tracks fine on my mousepad that is black with a print on it that's grey, red and white. It may not be complex enough to throw it off, or it's just that the pattern has similar properties to the rest of the surface, my Rat7 also tracked fine over the image and PTE are known for hating just about every surface.

That might be very true. My Zowie AM could not track on my black clothmat after I've installed Artisans thick skatez, but on the silver Razer Scarab there was no tracking problems at all.

When I talk about colors I don't mean that the sensor picks up the actual color. The way each color reflects light can be different on cloth pads. I have a black hard mat and the lift off is much lower than a black cloth. Hence why I state "black cloth" and not just the color black.

The Talent pads are cloth so only the properties of cloth should be mentioned.

The performance of a Deathadder is much less effected by patterns than a Zowie, but it is still technically not performing optimally. It is much less noticeable when the mouse transitions to another color or surface type. Trade off for that is higher LOD. The Deathadder doesn't seem to jitter because of the patterns/color. More like it has a brief drop of CPI and then it appears to recover.
