NVIDIA Surround or single monitor 3D Vision??

Thread Starter
Hi guys, so I'm looking to improve my gaming experience. Right now I've decided on the 2 technologies that are gaining popularity which I feel would improve my gaming experience the most and that is either NVIDIA Surround or NVIDIA 3D Vision. My original plan was to go the 5760x1080 route with 3 LG IPS236V monitors in NVIDIA Surround. I purchased the first monitor and am currently saving up for the other 2. This monitor has a larger bezel when compared to other displays which seem to be made to be ready for a multi-monitor setup. Reason I got this monitor is the price which is actually cheaper than even the non-IPS LED displays of other brands for sale here. As you all probably know, 3D monitors + NVIDIA 3D Vision 2 bundle doesn't come cheap, in all honesty even the total cost of the 3 displays would be a little cheaper than a single 23/24" LED 3D display + 3 Vision bundle.

So basically my question is, single BenQ 24" 3D monitor or 3xLG IPS236V on NVIDIA Surround? Keep in mind that the single 3D monitor will cost about $50-$100 more than the 3xLG displays.

I know this is subjective but I want to hear your opinion on the matter as I have been debating to myself what would give the better gaming experience. Also please only friendly and constructive comments, no bashing or flaming or rude behavior.

Thanks! smile.gif

Hmm, is that LG IPS236V 3D vision certified? If not, the NVidia driver will disable 3D vision. (Unless you do some EDID overriding, but officially it will lock you out)

No, I'll be selling this + the cash I've saved up to get the single 3D monitor. But if I go with NVIDIA Surround then I'd just purchase another 2 IPS236V. Cost is around $50-$100 more expensive if I decide to go with 3D. Plus the fact that I'd still just have a single, 24" monitor. smile.gif

Ah I see. If you go for another two IPS236V then you'd need to do that unofficial overriding thing to make it work. I've tried it last weekend on a Samsung S27A950 with the EDID from my Asus and it worked so yeah, it's possible. NVidia probably doesn't like it but so far they haven't managed to lock it down successfully.

As for the Benq, a friend has the 2420T but hasn't used 3D so far. He didn't want to spend another 150€ on the kit and the TX wasn't available anywhere. He likes it though. I'd guess surround is pretty awesome but have no firsthand experience. I'm fighting to get 3D TV Play on a beamer working currently but have to wait on the mailman.

Yeah if I go with Surround I'm not gonna be going for 3D since I hear 3D on a 60Hz monitor isn't a very good experience even if you do get it to work lol. Yeah I'm looking at the BenQ XL2420T for a single 3D setup but it is pricy. Basically I'm wondering whether 3D or Surround would be better. The large bezels on Surround seem like a deal breaker especially with my LG IPS236V which is why I'm considering just getting a single 3D monitor. If I had the money I'd go with 3 BenQs or a single Asus 27" VG278H even, but damn these monitors are expensive..

just buy 3d surround! problem solved tongue.gif but out of the 2 suround is best because it gives you 150 fov which is like real life.
but to run games on it you have to do a shaman dance every time, a lot of games comes out they don't support it out of the box, or the fov looks stretched, but 3d has better support.

But you have to buy 120Hz maybe just buy 1 monitor for now and you add 2 more later for 3d surround.

Lol if I had a budget like your's then maybe I can afford 3D Surround. wink.gif Another issue right now with 3D is I underestimated the cost of the 3D Vision 2 kit. Apparantly it's $200 for a single pair of glasses + the cost of a 120Hz monitor. Okay 3D seems like a lost cause for now due to the price. :|

I like the idea of Surround having full FOV especially in MMOs (Guild Wars 2) and racing games (Dirt Series). Plus it seems to be the overall cheaper option. BTW, I'm assuming when watching movies I won't be able to make use of surround since the video would stretch right? If 3D videos are available now then I could benefit from 3D with that as well, though with the price of glasses so high no other person in the house can watch with me and that would just suck.

for surround your monitor has to have matching make and model, I look on amazon your current monitor costs $254 so you have to spend $500 to get 2 more, or you can get 3x Acer GD235HZ for 120Hz $600 then sell yours off and get some $$ back

Oh I guess I finally understand what you're planning. Either 3D with a single display or Surround 2D with 3 displays. redface.gif

3D is kind of neat but frankly a hit and miss. Some games are awesome and some are still plain disappointing. Skyrim was fine and the reason why I bought that Asus. It wasn't perfect. Reflections in water were pretty much off but the rest was fine. Witcher2 was plain unplayable as the shadows were 2D and that alone made my brain melt. IIRC it even had a 3D vision certified badge on the package... talk about marketing! sozo.gif It's hard to describe the feeling when something is off. Your brain is trying to form a sensible scene from what it sees and things just don't add up. It feels... weird...totally! biggrin.gif Haven't really tried Dishonored for long but it looked kinda OK, also World of Tanks works pretty good nowadays. I'd rate 3D as some kinda nice-to-have but nothing essential.

Also the new NVidia glasses suck royally if you wear circumaural headphones. The contact points above your ears get some hefty clamping force and it's really not nice for long periods of time. Samsung's shutter glasses were totally in a different league in that regard.
Anyway... need to get back to those IKEA boxes over there in the corner.... tongue.gif

Thanks for the insight mate! Yeah my main reason for wanting 3D is because I hear Guild Wars 2 (main game as of the moment) looks totally awesome in 3D. It does benefit from Surround as well though. Main thing holding me back is the price of the glasses. $200 for a single pair..:|

Also will nvidia 3d vision work with non nvidia glasses? I also read about 3d vision 2 having some benefits especially with the brightness,is this esential or can I go with a 3D Vision 1 kit/monitor?smile.gif
