[SOLVED] DSLR or bridge camera?

Hey guys,

I have been looking to purchase a new camera (around the $500 mark, preferably less - has to be new because I'll probably be asking a friend to bring it to me from the US. Too expensive to buy electronic imports here in my country), but I'm having a hard time deciding whether I should take the DSLR route or just buy a good bridge camera.
I'm on a budget, so I suspect the DSLR world might become a bit expensive. Also photography is just a second hobby for me, so it's not like I'm trying to become a professional or something...

I've been looking at the Canon SX40 HS, which looks very interesting with it's super-zoom lens ("35x Wide-Angle (24-840mm) Optical Zoom Lens").
The Canon T3 and the Nikon D3100 look like they're pretty good entry-level DSLRs.

EDIT: I'm starting to lean towards the Nikon P7700 now. Small form-factor, but pretty decent sensor, lens and features.

Here are some of my photos with my basic point-and-shoot (Canon PowerShot A590 IS).
Currently I'd really appreciate better performance at low light (high ISO) and a longer zoom.

So what do you think? Any advice and/or suggestions?

Thanks! smile.gif

I despise bridge cameras. They take the worst of both worlds (P&S/SLR) and smash em together. I'd rather get a high end P&S over bridge cameras.

Yeah, turns out I've decided to do just that, I'll get a Nikon P7700. wink.gif

I can't see myself carrying around a DSLR anyway... It would probably end up gathering dust.

Nice choice. I would've gone for the Canon G series over them but I'm sure you'll enjoy using it.

I was in a dilemma between the P7700 and the G15, but it turns out I liked the P7700 samples a bit better (slightly sharper overall, see here for instance), and also the 28-200mm lens (versus 28-140mm in the G15). The Nikon also has a swiveling screen. wink.gif

The G15 does have the optical viewfinder though, but I rarely use it anyway. It also has that sweet f/1.8 ~ f/2.8 (versus f/2.0 ~ f/4.0 in the Nikon), but I figured I'd rather have the extra sharpness.

Nice choice nonetheless, have fun!
