Need Help Removing SmoothFont/ClearType on my Windows

I'll try and keep this brief, but I want to explain my situation thoroughly.

For a good long time I've been using a 24-inch 1080p monitor with my desktop. I watch a lot of TV shows/movies/YouTube on it, and whenever I invite friends over to watch it it feels really insufficient. So I finally bit the bullet and bought an HDTV to use as my monitor. It's a Sony Bravia 40-inch LED-backlit, 1920 x 1080. Right away I'm noticing some weird things, but for now I'll focus on the font issues.

I understand Smooth Font was always there... but for some reason when the pixels were small enough it didn't bother me. Now that the pixels are larger though... I notice every gray blur for every letter, even when viewing the screen at more than 5 feet away. I've placed the TV on a wall unit and moved my desk a bit back, so I'm about 2 feet further back then I was with my 24-inch setup, but I'm still seeing weird stuff with the font. I have Windows XP on my computer at work, and for whatever reason... none of the letters there use Smooth Font (I looked very carefully, all the letters are normally crisp), and THAT's how I want my letters to look. I just want to turn off Smooth Font, everywhere. I tried turning off "ClearType" but that didn't really do anything. It made all the letters thinner, but they still have grey all around them.

I've seen a bunch of guides online but a lot of them seem to be from 2009 and the pre-SP1 days. I really want an up-to-date solution to this. I've tried setting up a custome DPI, which does make the font larger, but it makes everything else bigger too. I don't want the window-borders or the icons to triple in size, I just want the text to be more crisp. For now the only real solution I've found is to use Ctrl+scroll wheel to make all the web-pages I visit larger. I've also been messing with the default font-size for Chrome and Firefox, but that's mostly just been confusing me more than anything else.

There seem to be a half-dozen different ways of messing with the font in Windows, and I just want one master switch to change everything, for all the apps and programs I use.

I'm pretty sure I did. That's what I got when I right click on the desktop, click "screen resolution", then under "Make text and other items larger or smaller", "Adjust ClearType text". It does do a difference, but I find the test annoying because the differences are very small... and in the end they seem to all still use the blurred edges.

I did find ANOTHER font editing feature, this one is pretty close to what I was asking for. I click the start menu, type "Appearances", click "Adjust the appearance..." and then I can unselect "Smooth edges of screen fonts". I tried it... and I'm not satisfied. I feel like I'm going to have to keep toying with these dozens of variables for weeks before I find my happy space.

Also. I noticed that it's easy to adjust the font size of websites I browse in Firefox or Chrome, but how do I change the font of the actual browser window? Things like the menu and the bookmarks bar. Those always stay the same size, how do I make those bigger. I find that the TV is most comfortable when I'm viewing it at 6 to 7 feet away, and that's probably going to require some pretty drastic UI changes. I'm giving the 105% DPI setting a try... it's totally messed up my icons, and the taskbar won't disappear when viewing fullscreen video anymore. But at least the fonts are bit easier to see from afar.

I think I found an approach I might like... I'll try it for a week and see if my eyes can get comfortable with it.

I found in "Right Click desktop", "Personalize", "Window Color", "Advanced Appearance Settings", I selected all the items in the list that had font size and increased it from 9 to 11. Some things are still a little off... (some of my bookmarks' names are too big for their boxes now), but all in all I'd say this is pretty close... Does anyone know what the XP default font is though? I feel like I should try and replace that "Segoe UI" that W7 uses... And I'm quite happy with whatever I use on the XP machine at my work.
