When I did mine,

1: Plug new HDD into an enclosure and connect via USB
2: Run Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the internal drive over
3: Swap drives, repair permissions etc.
4: Done.

That only works if the drive mounts and there isn't a lot of input/output errors. Also, make sure you do a disk repair through disk utility when you are done. Repairing permissions doesn't help much if there is also volume damage.

A better way to replace a drive (and the old drive is in relative decent condition is to reinstall the OS, update it, then attempt to do a Migration Assistant.

As for the whole roller thing, you actually use that? We just blow them with an electric air dealio and we're good to go. When I worked at Apple we used it because the dust problem in the room was awful, but where I am now it's all good.

I will have to try that biggrin.gif

Ok noted,

I did this ages ago under OS X 10.6 (moving a 5400RPM to a bigger 7200RPM)

And I did a disk repair, forgot to mention in the other post.

Everything worked well

Hey Xeb;

Just started reading your thread and it brought back all sorts of nostalgia. I worked as a service manager for a local ASP for about 2 years. I had many horror stories but one that really stands out is when a customer came in with an iMac that wouldnt boot. Opened that bad boy up and it was infested with ants, and I mean thousands of ants if not more. They had built a colony on top of the PSU, eventually they had shorted out the PSU which caused the unit to not boot anymore, also killing every single ant in the machine as well.

Took me forever to clean the mess out of the unit and off my work bench.

This is great. I just started an IT job a couple weeks ago and I was considering doing this very same thing(although I was thinking in a blog) but this makes much more sense and helps out the community as well as entertains. Sub'd

back when i worked at the campus AASP i had the same problem with the dust. it was super annoying. Plus those white gloves you "had" to wear eventually got dirty as well and left prints.

and then some of the early iMacs with this design had some weird fogging issue with the glass.

If only half the Mac techs I've met are as resourceful as you Xeb.

It seems to be the nature that most Mac tech (Apple or not) will try for a half hour or so and then just replace the drive.
