Upgrading 3 year old AMD budget box - $1000 to make this run quick! - Page 2

Yeah agreed with upgrade path - the reason i built my current PC was to follow the upgrade path to a X6 1090T, but 3 years later, it makes more sense for me to jump to the i7's or Xeons since the other chip has been harder to find new/I want more power.

Anything wrong with this SSD?
Intel 330 Series Maple Crest SSDSC2CT180A3K5 2.5" 180GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167122

Looks like the max IOps is a about half that of the Samsung 840, but offers 30% more space:

Hi Deuces,

Most of the GPUs from AMD's 7000 series or NV's 600 series will support at least 3 monitors, there shouldn't be any reason to need multiple GPUs in the rig. However, if you will be using a lot of pro apps, you would be best served in the long run with a workstation class card anyway, as you will get the best performance from a certified/optimized GPU in those apps. Something like a V4900 is worth a look (reasonably priced entry level workstation card) if you want to keep the budget tight. Otherwise something from the new W series (28nm) from AMD might be worth a look.

There's nothing wrong with the Intel 330 series, especially at that price for a 180GB! Snag it!

Ok, so doing some additional shopping today - I'm leaning toward the Xeon now and am just researching some differences between z77 and B75 boards. The ASRock extreme4 is only 104.99 right now, so that might just get the nod, but looking at their B75 alongside Gigabyte's/MSI's /Asus's as well.

I'll look through some other threads, but any idea on some decent RAM to stick in this box? I'm looking for 8 or 16GB.

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231568&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=
I'd probably go with this kit if you wind up on one of the Gigabyte boards as the color scheme will match, and $60 is a pretty respectable price for a decent 2x8.

The 180GB SSD went out of stock as I'm sure you know, but last I checked, the 240GB version of the same drive was available for $140< also a steel.

I'd go with something like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/p5A4

Great for doing pretty much anything, decent GPU in there, and you can add your own case! smile.gif

Thanks for the suggestions Mhyles - I've already decided to go with the Xeon though.

Found the same SSD through TigerDirect for 90 after a rebate.

Motherboard I chose was the Gigabyte Z77X-D3H ($99 after rebate). A bit annoying with rebates, but it was only 20 dollars more than most of the B75s I was looking at.

Just need to find decent deals on RAM (looking at your suggestion mdocod, thanks!), a PSU (600W? or less?), getting a good deal on a graphics card and choosing a new case with front USB 3.0 slots and is pretty quiet - I'm thinking the P280 or similar?

Deuces,

You are on a very good path for the build. The D3H mobo is stellar if not overkill for this. but the price isn't bad for the quality/robustness.

Yep! Pretty stoked so far - I'm still not quiet sure what GPU to go for but I've picked up a few other pieces.

GSkill was sold out so went with: Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB (CAS 10, but cheap @ $63)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233280

PSU: The 80Plus Gold looked a bit overkill, so I went with 80Plus Bronze for 75 out of pocket , $50 after rebate(not OCing or doing anything crazy, and this had good reviews)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020
CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE

Picked up a H212 Evo (will set this low to be quiet, but way better than the stock cooler I'm sure) and some MX4

Things I still need:

GPU i'm looking for needs to fit these requirements:
  • 2GB most likely if I'm triple monitoring (I think?)
  • HDMI/DVI/DisplayPort inputs

Case: I'm strongly considering buying a new case since USB 3.0 front ports would be nice - and I won't want to recable/set up the box twice. Want something quiet but with good cable management - P280 looks interesting, but am open to suggestions.

Will reuse the DVD drive from my sig rig.
