If you go the Home Theater system approach, just make sure whatever receiver it may be, has the inputs you need to interface with your PC properly. When I use my PC through my Onkyo TX-NR809, I use an optical cable. Lower end receivers may not have optical input, but regardless make sure whichever way you plan to do it is a feasible option. It would suck to purchase something and not have it work easily with your sound card.

I haven't seen an Onkyo receiver yet that didn't have an optical input, but I was only looking at HTIB's. One of the things that was actually putting me off is the fact that I can't find a fairly recent Onkyo receiver with analog inputs and I was shooting for full 7.1. Having no experience with receivers, I was unsure how well Dolby would be able to convert the optical signal to 7.1. I'm past the point of insisting on 7.1 though, I'm fairly confident that I can get the field of audio I want by tweaking my software on a 5.1 setup.

Edit: My sound card does have optical.

Oh it does? Looking at the OCN page for it, it didn't show it. Odd.

Haha, yes. That was the other part that I left out... not all sound cards have optical outputs.

If the sound card and the receiver both have either optical S/PDIF or digital coax - it's easy as cake to set up.

That one. Optical is done by plugging in an adapter to the Mic plug. It's not a traditional optical port.

For most intents and purposes, a 5.1 will probably do what you want it to do. I have a 5.1 setup for my PC and a 7.1 set up for my home theater. 7.1 isn't super necessary, but it's neat on the movies and such that actually support it... The majority of source material is coded for 5.1 and doesn't make use of the additional channels.

Of course, if you want to future proof yourself, having a 7.1 receiver will give you room to grow if you decide to. Of course with that, the price will climb.

I got started out with a cheap Sony HTIB years ago... it was ok for an inexpensive box of stuff, but being a bit of an audiophile and a car audio enthusiast, it didn't take long till I got rid of that stuff and upgraded big time...

It's a vile disease that only putrefies with time, I know...

Knowing that I'm safe with an Onkyo receiver helps with piecing something together though. I think my best bet is waiting til Friday now, since between all the sites I have bookmarked I should be able to throw something acceptable together for pretty cheap.

Thanks for helping me with the decision, and damn you Simca for that link....wink.gif

Haha, welcome.

Yeah, any of the DIY audio related sites are dangerous if you're the type to get sucked in...

There are a lot of great DIY audio sites. Whether it be for raw components, full un-assembled kits, whatever have you. It's fun, but gets expensive. But if you look at it one way, the DIY approach can save you a lot of money when we're speaking high-end equipment over buying name brand. ...And of course the satisfaction of knowing it was your creation and unique.

If you come up with any ideas in the coming days and want to bounce them off someone, feel free to shoot me a PM.

You mean the same reason I ended up building a gaming pc after reading OCN for a while? biggrin.gif
