Worrying events with my 7950, any thoughts?

Hello everyone!

I got a new MSI Twin Frozr III Radeo 7950 this Saturday, naturally I jumped right on the OC train. The most I've ever upped the voltage to was 1.17V, but it started getting too hot so I set it lower again (I need to buy some extra fans for my case to improve the airflow). Either way the temps never crossed 95 for VRM 1 and 80 for Core.

But yesterday something strange happened. All of a sudden my screen exploded into a trippy clusterf*ck of color.. (Think old Commodore 64 when you were loading a game from a tape). The card was in 2D mode when this happened, and I was doing nothing GPU or even CPU intensive.. Just browsing. I had to reboot to get rid of the problem.

If it helps, I have had the same driver stability issues with MSI afterburner as many others with the newer drivers (Catalyst 12.10 and 12.11beta) That is, flickering lines when altering clocks in 2D mode. In addition to yesterday's event, my screen would not turn on when I came back home today, I had to reset my PC.

Has anyone else experienced problems like these before with 12.10/12.11 drivers and MSI afterburner? Or does this smell of a defective video card? I should mention that it hasn't happened again since, and under stress in 3D mode it works perfectly fine. Stressed it hard with various benchmarks and it never so much as coughed.

Thanks for your input, kinda worried since the last time I saw a big trippy band of colors on a monitor, it meant dead video card. :\

Use MSI Afterburner and set stable clocks in say setting #1 and use those in 2D mode as the card is downclocking too much and creating problems in 2D mode.

use the latest 12.11 beta 8 drivers. first test your card at stock speeds with benchmarks like Heaven 3.0 and games like BF3. Keep working with it for a day or two. For a 1080p monitor why do you even need to overclock. You can max out every game at 1080p at 60 fps. if required just stick to slight overclocking at stock voltage to 1Ghz. You really don't need any more performance. Try to keep core temps below 70c and VRM temps below 90c.

Those temps you had are IMO a bit high. I'd roll back drivers as I had a problem with 12.6's beta or something just making me artifact all over the place.

I don't quite understand what you mean. The card normally runs at 300mhz in 2D mode and this is stock, unmodified behaviour. Could you please explain what exactly is causing problems here?

Thank you for the responses!

I know the temps were a bit high, but I didn't keep them running like that for long, only a minute or two to test how high they would go.

Also the reason I am overclocking is because like many on this forum, I just want to see how far I can push this beast. I will however hold back on it until I can get some better cooling.

Oh, and there are some games where overclocks are still beneficial (Crysis 2 and Metro 2033 come to mind).

Up the core and perhaps the memory a bit while in 2D mode from the stock 300MHz.

My brother had issues with his 7950 Twin Frozr as well today. When overclocking using MSI AB his card worked perfectly fine when stressed but when it switched to 2D mode it gave artifacts all over.

Did you enable the unofficial overclocking in MSI AB? ( in that .cfg file in the program files)
If you did: did you change it to 1 to enable it?
If so: change it to 2 . This will keep the card at the 3D clocks and resolved my brother's issues.

Hope that fixes it for you thumb.gif

Your card will run a bit hotter and use a bit more power at idle this way but it's nothing major really.

How do you do that? ( without flashing a modified BIOS) would be a "cleaner" solution as well for my brother.

12.11b & afterburner have issues if you leave downclocking enabled...or your overclock isn't stable.
