I posted this in another thread (now closed), but looking at the instrumentation of the rover, finding methane in the soil is a pretty big find (not that they have, only my speculation and best guess). Some journals stated there was methane in the atmosphere, but I cannot confirm it. As far as oil, that would be overwhelming evidence of life at one time. I was under the impression that they were to release the news 2 days ago. Nothing online as of yet.

(The SNES controller was definately the most comical)

Dear NASA, stop being "mum" about information that tax payers paid for, and spill the beans.

Some other info on Space OIL:
(this is about titan) however mars has a much less hostile environment to work in.

"Many scientists and analysts say extraterrestrial sources of energy could provide humankind with enough heat and energy for hundreds of years to come and would help it cope with a snowballing energy crisis."
http://www.space-travel.com/reports/Do_We_Need_Oil_From_Outer_Space_999.html

This is why we are there for the most part. Maybe not oil, but for other resources. If Mars turns out to have abundant supplies of rare earth minerals, it may be worth the costs of mining and transporting them back.

the Jimmy Hoffa jokes need to die lol

Prewtty sure based ona video I watched that the guy who made the "One for the History Books" discovery, that it is something to do with what was found int eh Soil.

Still no info that i could find about what it is however, but it is Definitely something in the soil.

Hope its something good, the last Rover found perchlorate int he soil, which is pretty detrimental for life to exist

It's going to have to be not only "rare", but something that is OBSCENELY RARE here on Earth, and I doubt that that stuff will be just laying around the surface of Mars.

As of yet, we haven't come up with a way to even land a ship that is capable of taking back off from the surface of another planet, plot a course back to Earth, and land back here. It's one thing to launch from 17% of Earth gravity and 146 times closer (384,000 miles to moon vs 56,000,000 miles to Mars), but Mars gravity is 38% of Earths, which is over double that of the moon.

I honestly don't see mankind doing anything like "Mars mining" for material to return to Earth for hundreds of years ... on the optimistic side.

If I remember correctly, the methane in the air were leftovers of the air coming from the capsule it was sent in. So, air that came from earth. When they ran the tests again, they could not find any methane in the air.
