Need opinions on new pfsense server

Thread Starter
I currently live in a fraternity with about 16 people living in the house. We are currently just using someones old athlon x2 with 1 gb of ram and it is hitting 100% cpu and memory usage.

We have two blade servers in the basement that we want to use to replace the old computer.

one is a Intel SR1300 with two proccessors

the other is a HP proliant dl140 with one cpu.

I know the sr1300 has a significant amount of memory and believe the HP has 1 gb

which one would work best for the new pfsense or perhaps untangled?

pfsense is not ram hungry by nature unless you're using caching proxies/squid/av.

I still wouldn't have thought it would lock at 100%, though. Have you run TOP from shell to see what is using that much cpu time?

Untangle needs a bit more horsepower than pfSense. Either machine will run both OSes admirably. If you want you could get fancy, install ESXi on one of the machines and run both options in VMs. tongue.gif

No idea really, since I haven't used it myself. It has more AV and filtering options by all accounts, but I don't need all of that stuff. pfSense is more than good enough for me. smile.gif
