Anyone own this card? I'm in the market for a good, fast agp card.
I've been considering a BFG GeForce 7800 GS OC 256MB GDDR3 AGP, I think it's a little cheaper because it's on sale. But this card doesn't seem too bad at all.

not sure of your situation but you can buy a pci-e x1950pro for $200 and then buy a pci-e mobo for $100.

The x1950Pro AGP would own a 7800GS...

Thanks Mr Pink, I was thinking it would. I have an Ati 9600 Pro now, and I also have a Nvidia 6200 (not nv42, nv44 can't soft boot), and personally, the Nvidias card kicks ati cards at 640x480 or 800x600.
But, I prefer to play my games at 1024x768 at least, but like EQ2, Dark Messiah, I have to put the settings down to almos the lowest, and it sucks. But my ati is just a little faster then the 6200 (even though the 6200 has twice the memory).

Jazino:

I've considered the upgrade option. But, the problem here is, i'm stuck with getting my things from best buy, since I'm returning stuff there for credit. I'm not sure how much credit i'm going to end up with. If i got enough to upgrade my mb, & my cpu, & my memory (sure, i could keep my current mem if I go with amd, or i can go for a better cpu with intel and have to upgrade my memory also). I do already have an x600 pci express version, and I have 2 gigs of 533mhz ddr2 just sitting on a shelf. (those are from a failed upgrade attempt. I hadn't researched enought at the time and didn't know I couldn't move my P4 (prescott) to a PCI express mb.

But I will defiently have enough credit to buy a video card, and since the manufactures have figured out that most of us still own agp, there are finally some decent choices out there.

Trust me, if I can upgrade my mb also I will be doing it. I just hate i'm stuck at best buy doing this, but trying to sell all the games and other crap (new) that i've gotten from my bday & upcoming christmas over craigslist just isn't working.

I found some xbox games that a place is selling for $4 each that best buy will give you credit of $40 & $30 for. These are new, still packaged of course. What am I to do? =)

Actually, I should see what fry's return policy is...

thanks for the input, so far, unless anything changes, I think i'm going to the ati card.

I am getting the card tomorrow, providing the Bellevue Best Buy actually has it in stock (supposed to have 4). I have just under $300 in credit, so i will pay the rest with cash. I just hope the store has it, otherwise I guess I will have to order it online.
My only other choice was the 7800 GS OC with 256 mb ram, that was around $250. But according to the tech reports review, it was okay, decent for it's price. though if i remember correct, it seem about half as fast on 3dmark06 as some ati x1900 they had tested also.
I'm not even sure what my current computer does on 3dmark06, since i think it didn't even break 1000 on 3dmark05, probably less then 500 on it. =)

Dang, I haven't been this excited since I built my gaming rig almost 3 years ago.

Anyways, I'll do a review of it after I test it out.

Okay, here's the specs:
575Mhz VPU
1380 GDDR3 Memory
Shader Model 3.0
Dual Link DVI x2
S-video and Composite Video TV-Out
Componet HDTV YPbPr Output
Windows Vista Ready (ATI Certified)
HDCP Blu-ray/HD DVD Ready

Ati's Catalyst 6.11 drivers. I had set everything to quality.

It must weigh about 2 pounds. The thing is heavy!
It fit fine into my computer and I had no problems installing it. I did also upgrade my power supply, from 350 watts to this 500 watt one I had (new of course) because it had the same 6 prong plug that the X1950 pro took.
It did come with a Y-adapter for it's plug, also a DVI to VGA adapter (which I am using), and a componet out cable for the round vid out port.
My computer:
P4 3ghz Prescott 800mhz FSB, 1mb cache
Asus P4SD-LA MB (Made for HP)
2 512mb PC3200 ram running at 400mhz (Single Channel)
Sound Blaster Audigy NX (usb)
2.1 speakers
Logitech mx510 mouse
Logitech Elite Keyboard
oh, yes, the monitor is this sweet ViewSonice PF790 monitor I got a few weeks ago off craigslist. Does 1600x1200 at 77hz, flat screen. Seems is almost perfect shape. Which is good, because apparently I got a card that I can use the upper resolutions. =)

All benchmarks were ran at default settings, I didn't change anything.

The first benchmark I ran was 3dMark2001se. I have to admit I wasn't very impressed and was wondering if maybe I was in for a let down.
3DMark2001 = 18541

I was scoring about 12000 with my Ati 9600 Pro, so while that is still pretty cool score, i just thought maybe it would be in the 20000's. But, DirectX8 isn't what I bought that card for. =)

3DMark03 = 13505

Okay, now this is cool. I was pulling just over 3000 before.

3DMark05 = 6354

Seems like a good score, at least way better then what I had before (1862)
Though my CPU score was really bad. I know the MB I have sucks badly, wonder how much performance I would gain with a better mb...

3DMark06 = 3822

My cpu & mb is probably holding this benchmark back.

Well, that's all the test I am running for now. I'm going to play some games and have fun. I do have a decent MSI K7 Delta-ilsr AMD mb, and while I have an anthlon 2600+ (thoroughbred) in it, I recently got a shuttle that has a athlon 2800+ (barton) in it. I will take the barton out and put it in my msi mb, and since I can control everything with that mb's bios. Actually, i think i have another good mb for those chips around here somewhere.
Guess what I am saying is I'll have more tests with the card. I just need to find a good mb for my P4 Prescott cpu (800fsb, 3ghz, 1mbcache), hopefully that doesn't cost more the $50 nowadays. Guess I should ask about that over in the intel section.

Anyways, that's my quick little run down of the vid card. I'm going to play some Need for Speed Most Wanted, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, and some EQII. I have to clear some room for some other games I put away because I wanted to play them with them looking nice & decent fps.
I will let you know how those played tomorrow.

Spent about 5 hours playing a few different games last night. While I am totally pysched about the new card, I'm sort of disappointed with it also.
For example, NFS: Most Wanted.
I normally play it at 800x600, with setting about mid. I had actually turned some stuff down so I could get to as close as a 60 fps games as I could (like it to be smooth).
Well, I put it at 1024x786, turned up the eye candy, and it was doing under 30 fps, and dipping down to the teens. So I took off the AA, nocked a few settings down, so it's getting a bit about 30, without really dipping down.

Dark Messiah of Might & Magic yes, I can turn up some eye candy, but the framerates aren't much better.

EQII, well, doesn't look as good as I thought it would. I have to screw around with settings to get a decent framerate, and in all honesty, the game doesn't look much better with textures at high then it does with them at low.

Of course, my expectations were probably higher then they should of been, and of course, my motherboard sucks badly, and I know it's holding my computer back. I can't change the agp texture memory from 64mb. That's really, really lame.

I guess it's possible the card is just too much for my cpu/mb combo.

I am very happy I have the card, so it's not like I want to take it back or anything. I just need to find out what works with the card. What settings actually affect performance and stuff.
Oh, I guess part of my dislike of how eqII looks is because you can't turn on AA in the games options, I guess I would have to turn it on in the driver settings. Unless it takes too much performance hit.

Oh, when I ran the benchmarks, I had Ati's latest driver, 6.11. The 6.10 won't install on my system, doesn't recongise the card. the disk that came with it had 6.9 on it, so I installed that to see if maybe there was some issues with the 6.11 drivers. I don't think there is. Matter of fact, I'm changing it back to the 6.11, just because it's the latest, and hopefully has some bugs fixed. (didn't read the release notes).

I use my P4 system, even though it has the horrid mb for my gaming, because it's memory bandwidth and stuff is better then my AMD mb's (though i'd say my non barton 2600 is about the same speed as the p4 3ghz, the memory bandwidth and stuff almost doubles it in sandra tests).

Unfortunely, the 2800 barton is in this shuttle I recently got, and i'm not sure the ps could handle the x1950 in it. I should try, otherwise I have to take apart my shuttle and other computer to swap cpus.

Anyways, I still stand by this card as a great AGP card for your system. But it seems that old school cpu's aren't enough for todays higher end vid cards (not saying that this is "High End", but it's defiently better then "mid range"), so you might want to keep that in mind.

Plus my benchmarks were similiar to what was posted for the Geforce GS OC 7800 AGP 256mb card I was looking at, at those benchmarks were made with a better cpu/mb then what I have. So I wonder how they would compare on the same system?

Anyways, going to get back to playing with the vid card. Will add more thoughts later, might even actually redo the review into something more readable. Probably not though.
