GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI with INTEL Core I7-3930K and 64 GB RAM: KHX16C9T2K4/32 or F3-2133C9Q-32GTX ?

Hi all,

I intend to replace my old PC. The 64 GB RAM is mandatory for me (I will use the machine as a test environment with a few VM’s on it – 10 – 12 VMs).
My question is related to memory model / brand.
I was thinking to go with:

It should work, right?
I am asking this because I checked the recommended memory list for this motherboard and I didn’t saw the HyperX Predator there (or a configuration I can go with up to 64 GB) http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_ga-x79s-up5-wifi.pdf.
I checked also on the Kingston site the recommended modules for GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI, but I found this http://www.kingston.com/en/memory/search?DeviceType=7&Mfr=GIG&Line=GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI&Model=79195 (no KHX16C9T2K4/32 HyperX Predator in the list).

So, my main questions:
1. Should work fine with 2 x Kingston KHX16C9T2K4/32 HyperX Predator? The official lists can be outdated, but from specification point of view, it will work?
2. I could also go with 2 x F3-2133C9Q-32GTX G.SKILL TridentX (http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=552), but same story with the official lists of compatible motherhoards.
3. Did any of you put 64 GB on a GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI? If yes, what type of memory?
4. Any tips for the proposed configuration (in terms of overclocking, or in general … tips)?

PS: I am pointing to KHX16C9T2K4/32 because it has CL9. The Kingston 32 GB recommended for this motherboard is KVR16E11K4/32 – but is Value RAM and it has CL11.

Many thanks for replies.

Just get what's on the qvl list. You can always get multiple smaller kits too.

Hi Poisoner,

Unfortunately your answer does not help too much. The motherboard has 8 slots. 2 x Kingston KHX16C9T2K4/32 = 8 modules of 8 GB (each). I will use all the slots.
If I have to follow the official list from Kingston, then the only option is to go with KVR16E11K4/32. But this is not on my preference list (it is CL11).
The official list from Gigabyte does not provide anything that can go up to 64 GB (but the motherboard support 64 GB).
The G.SKILL dosen't have GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI in the list.

From specification point of view seems to work, but ... - we all know how tricky things can be.

1. Kingston memory usually does well on compatibility, so I don't think you will be having any compatibility issues. 64Gb at DDR3-1600 also doesn't seem like a huge strain to the IMC. The only thing I would worry about is that Predator heatsinks are slightly fatter than normal ones, so four modules together (on each side of the CPU) might sit slightly awkward.
2. Should also work fine, even though not all IMCs can handle 64Gb at DDR3-2133.
4. I'd recommend raising tRFC to 300ish and Vccsa to 1.10-1.15V.

Thanks for reply.

I wrote to the Gigabyte support and ask them to confirm those two memory models.
I am still searching and maybe the person who also asked an opinion for GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI with 64 GB RAM (DDR3-2133) will confirm the setup.

Any other replies are appreciated.

The configuration you've posted should "work".

However, I would consider a different board. The X79S-UP5 has throttling issues that essentially make OCing impossible with at least a significant fraction of 3930Ks and it's handling of eight DIMMs is not particularly graceful. The board needs new firmware.

Only situation I can see myself actually recommending this board is if you aren't OCing, don't intent to run past DDR3-1600 speeds with eight DIMMs, and need the C606's SAS controller (which is by far the best way to get 8 fast SAS/SATA 3Gbps ports without costing a fortune).

Hi all,

I confirm. It is working OK with 64 GB. The configuration I have now is:
GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI (motherboard) http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4287#sp
INTEL Core I7-3930K (CPU) http://ark.intel.com/products/63697/Intel-Core-i7-3930K-Processor-12M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz
G.SKILL F3-12800CL10Q2-64GBZL (8Gx8) http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=432

I recommend this configuration. No issues found.

Best regards.
