SSD to look out for this Black Friday? - Page 3

As an Intel owner I would say go with the Kingston, it's the nicer drive when compared to the 330, if we were talking 520 things would be different but in this case my vote goes to the HyperX.

Its for a good price it almost makes me tempted but in my experiences OCZ makes pretty shoddy drives I ordered one once and it came DOA talked to a few buddies about it and out of the 6 drives bought all through newegg and ncix 5 were dead within 2 months the last one made it another 4 before dying we've all sworn off ocz, that's not to say all ocz drives are crap i'm sure there are more than a few people who are happy with them but I wouldn't chance it

Ignorant comment is ignorant. As a brand OCZ has a failure rate for SSD's at about ~3.5% (rough) vs Corsair at about ~2.7%

When it comes to SSD's, like most other products, you get what you pay for.

Corsair is a premium brand, which charges premium prices, and has a less than 1% better failure/return rate. OCZ is usually significantly cheaper, and has a slightly higher failure/return rate...

I see nothing wrong with that, in any way. OCZ doesn't have disastrous rates of failures and returns, not even close to what people will go on and on about on OCN. But if you buy a low end 128GB SSD for $70, would you expect it to be as fast, or as reliable as a high end 128GB SSD costing $120? If you do, your not living in a little thing called reality.

OCZ is fine for a budget brand for the most part. Like anything else, buy a lower quality PSU and don't expect rock solid efficiency, buy cheap ram, don't expect high freq and low timings, buy a cheap CPU, don't expect it to unlock cores and OC to the max mhz range.

So why people think OCZ should be as good as Corsair, Intel, and Samsung for SSD's, I'll never know.

For an interesting comparison, Intel has a failure/retuirn rate of around ~0.3% while Corsair is about ~2.7%. I guess Corsair is overpriced garbage prducts right? I mean, it IS 2.4% higher in failure rates, much bigger difference than the 0.8% between OCZ and Corsair... yet one sucks and the other is a godly brand rolleyes.gif

To clarify, OCZ isn't the best, but far from as bad as people here state. Like ANY brand, they will have some models/product lines that are better than others. You can't rely on brand name to determine quality 100% of the time, it doesn't work that way. Don't be a biased sheep like a lot of people here, read reviews, do some research, OCZ has some great products, and they have bad prducts, just like Antec, Corsair, etc...

/Rant

Edit> my info is based off 2011 numbers, and aren't exact... but paints a clear enough picture...

Ah, but the thing is when you can buy a similar capacity Intel 330/335/520, Samsung 830, Crucial m4, Plextor M3/M5S, etc for the same $70 that the OCZ drive will cost, it makes sense to go with the one with better QC and customer support.

I owned almost all of OCZ's products, yes, even their Solids. Vertex 3 gave me some trouble early on because of firmware, no problems ever since, been running it on my main for a year now. No problems on any of their other drives.

I'm really hoping vertex would come out (tomorrow)and gauge the ssd stock on bf and cm, 830s are discontinued and 840 pro is at an interesting place right now.

I would go with that 330.

are we all aware that these drives get slower the more data they have? or have i been out of the ssd world for too long? cant remember when i bought my120gb ssd but four months after and with 15gb left of space it was half as fast as spec speeds. so i ask myself whats the point of posting write/read speeds if its gonna go down a by a lot after a few months and a bunch of gb of applications/game???
