I always thought that the more characters the more possible combinations the longer it would take to break through brute force? Therefore, longer is always better.

If I'm personally attacking a password, I'm generally not going to bother even with an all-lowercase character set after 12 characters or so, it simply takes forever. I may advise against simply just using common word combinations as password mutation algorithms for password lists can easily combine common words.
