HDMI. I no likey.

Hey all.

You know, i was considering putting this into the rants and raves section, but i figure this is more of a question on my part than anything else - perhaps i'm just ignorant on the subject or doing something wrong, but anyway;

HDMI is poo.

At least, thats how i feel about it's image clarity. Perhaps it's the quality of the cables i use (or perhaps not, tbh i don't think it makes a difference) but i find that image clarity of HDMI has nothing on DVI. Text often appears slightly jagged, making it hard to read, and colours just don't stand out as much as what i noticed on DVI. Regardless of how much i (we) tinker with HDMI settings both on monitors and software.

What really bugs me though is the jagged text/lines, almost like playing a game with no AA, and i HATE jagged lines. It's ugly as heck and if my desktop looks like it needs AA then really, me and HDMI just aint gunna get along. It's even worse on the bigger screens/higher resolutions.

This topic has kinda cropped up a few times between me and a few friends, whome prefer the convenience of HDMI over DVI for their PC's as it carried audio as well as video signals. To me though, it just seems like a rather silly argument as any serious gaming machine would have a dedicated soundcard anyway - seems like a waste bypassing it. HDMI's place seems best off with consoles i feel.

So, can anyone relate? I certainly know i'm not seeing things and definitely notice a difference in image clarity. Is it true that a better "quality" HDMI cable makes a difference? (I'm really skeptical of that after seeing the ridiculously priced "quality" HDMI cables. Screams marketing BS to me).

Edit:

I should probably point out that i personally use this type of HDMI lead whenever i take my rig around other peoples homes to use on their TV's:

I quite like this type as it reduces any strain on my ports on the back of the card - perhaps this contributes to the clarity issues i describe?

I do like the convenience of HDMI but i really think it just lacks the image quality of what DVI offers, and if given the chance, would always choose the latter over the former.

I feel the same when ever I plug it in to a TV it looks harrid but in a way I think its more down to the TV as HDMI monitors tend to look a lot better but still not as good to me as DVI but a lot better than a TV, I used the 40" at my mothers a few times and it looked horried but it did have a game mode that did help text out alot but the colors still seemed off.

Pixel format and under/overscale settings are the main things to mess up HDMI. There should be no actual reason for HDMI to perform any different to DVI, but it has a lot more variables because of the multi-purpose nature of HDMI. Some monitors just handle HDMI signal different which usually means it gets worse. That is not the fault of HDMI but the monitor.

I for one use HDMI and get a perfect picture with it. I also use it for routing audio. I don't have a dedicated sound card and I'm quite sure I never will. I like to do my sound processing outside my computer case, thank you very much.
