You use it very, very rarely. And I'd argue that it's superior to the old start menu, once you've personalized and organized it. Stock, it's quite cluttered.

And that is also one of the fundamental problems with it. The Start Menu has an organized menu at stock.

- You have the latest used programs right in plain sight, complete with jump lists of the last files you worked with, so you can pick up where you left on any of them (can't do it in the Modern UI);

- You can search everything from the Start Menu and even drag and drop the files from there to any folder you want, along with other file operations you may want to do, like delete the file, for example (can't do this in the Modern UI);

- If you want to browse your installed programs you can browse the alphabetically organized list at your will, with minimum scrolling and only open the program folder you want, instead of having everything chaotically scattered on the Modern UI;

- Access to computer management (the power user Menu from Windows 8 should be integrated in the Control panel button, with a secondary button, à la button next to the Shut Down button in the Start Menu, by the way) is available from the Start Menu, while you have to access other menus in the Modern UI for the same functionality, unless you also decide to have them scattered around the Modern UI, and then have to organize them;

- Newly installed programs are highlighted in the Start Menu, so you have a clear notion what program folders the program created and what files it put in them, you don't have this in the Modern UI.

As a power user, I like Windows 8 a lot. Audit mode is fantastic.

Compare this "study" with Microsoft usability and telemetry data and the study can go smoke a cone. (In theory because no one here would have access to that data....or maybe they do).

I agree with all of this, plus windows 7 = 2 clicks to shut down. Windows 8 = move mouse to just the right spot, and if your computer isnt up to snuff you could have to wait awhile, then 3 clicks. much more complicated

My biggest issue is the search.

Windows 7 : Windows key + start typing. Search everything.
Windows 8 : Windows key + start typing get only applications. Use arrow key to move to settings.

Whoever though about this should have been fired instantly.

"Again, why are you using Metro functions on a desktop? "
BECAUSE Windows 8 is a DESKTOP operating system so one should be able to use EVERYTHING in it in a TRADITIONAL DESKTOP. mad.gif

Also I hate seeing things like swipe, slide, touch on my desktop. Would it be so hard for Microsoft to detect if I actually have a touch screen before saying such rude things.
