I want to mix my black ram with my red stuff. I know the tops aren't the same, but it's not important tongue.gif
I just want to make sure that I can mix and match 2 different brands like this...
I dont know about brands, but I have a 2x2x kit of Patriot Viper and another 2x2 kit of the cheap patriot ram. When Buying I checked that they where the same voltage and speed just to be carefull
post #3 of 7
well one kit is rated at 1.65V and the other at 1.5V.. this can cause instability in your RAM unless you match the voltages
Quote:
The following conditions do not need to be met:

Same brand
Same timing specifications
Same speed (MHz)

Memory channel speed is decided by the slowest DIMM module populated in the system.

BTW, why buy a 4 x 4GB kit is you only have 4 slots? or do you plan on have a couple of spares.. or have another rig like an x58 or x79?

They're different brands, different voltages and timings. No, don't mix them. Always stay with one brand of the same exact type

I have the Corsair kit installed in my current system, and picked up 2 4GB kits for cheap. I'll be installing them on an ASUS Maximus V Gene, and wanted the color match tongue.gif

ahh well you can try it aslong as you manually set the Kingston HyperX Blu to 1.5V, but might lose speed as a trade off but will be stable. run memtest if you do it..

i think what would look good and give you no issues to worry about is paint the heat spreaders on two or the corsair sticks red smile.gif

It's still DDR3, just means the stock settings for one set might be too much for the other set and you'll be limited to whatever OC the weaker of the two can manage.

OP, I'm running 4 sticks of 2GB, 2 are 2133MHz G.Skill ripjaws and 2 are 1600MHz Corsair XMS3.
The G.Skills should run 1600 on about 1.5 but I'm using 1.6 or so as that's what the XMS3 needs.
Yes you can mix them.
In this case, set voltage to 1.65V 1.6 or less (whatever's the safe max for the IB controller, I'm not sure off the top of my head) and see what you can get out of them.
As long as you stay within the safe voltage limit for both kits then I don't see how you could have problems if you can get them running stable.

If you were buying new I'd say just get similar or identical kits as it's easier but nothing's stopping you from mixing them.
