Alright, explain this. I ran a single 7970 in the x16 slot and got 47 fps at the top of the first tower overlooking a certain direction. I then move the card to the x8 slot and get 24fps, same area, same settings.

I then add the 2nd card and put CF off. I now get 24fps in that area on the top card. What is the difference even though CF is off? Oh yeah that's right.....the top slot is reduced to x8!

Now I enable CF and get exactly 47fps at x8 x8, because x8 bandwidth + x8 bandwidth = x16 effective of 7970 power.

Go and test it! (Issue FC3 only)
I know this seems crazy. I was massivly suprised that this game uses all my x16 bandwidth 3.0 and chokes at x8.

Except he has a 2500K, which is PCIe 2.0 only. So his x16 PCIe slots are the same as your x8 PCIe slots.

Rest of specs are in sig.

Settings:

AA x 8, everything is maxed, v-sync on, SSAO set to HDAO, Direct X 11, 1920x1080 res

Frames:

45-60. I tried finding areas that made my FPS the lowest. Looking out over cliffs into heavy jungle I get a constant 45 FPS. Everywhere else though its pretty much a steady 50 FPS.

The 7970 may be more bandwidth dependant based on the much higher memory bit bandwidth and the arcetechture design might influence how the game is processed and what is required.
Look, from x8 to x16 gives me double the fps, that's all I'm saying. I urge others to try if you have a 7970.

Read this again:

You're trying to find explanations for what you saw, and that's great, but you picked the one thing that isn't going to matter. So everyone with a 2500K/2600K and a 7970/7950 is getting half the FPS of those using the same cards in a 3570K/3770K system, and no one noticed?

Guru3D did their Far Cry 3 performance test on a X58 system (PCIe 2.0) and the 7970 performed pretty much as you'd expect. They wouldn't have noticed if their 7970 results were half of what other sites found?
http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/far_cry_3_graphics_performance_review_benchmark,1.html

You are also saying that a single 7970 gives you the same performance as 2x7970s, which implies zero Crossfire scaling. No one else with a Crossfire system noticed that they were getting zero Crossfire scaling? HardOCP got pretty much 100% scaling with their Crossfire test:
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/12/05/far_cry_3_video_card_performance_preview/3

I don't doubt what you saw, it is just that your explanation for it is unsound. More likely that you have a motherboard or card problem, or an issue with drivers.

Nobody noticed because everyone is using different settings and not many people have something to compare to.
Look, x8 halved my fps compared to x16. I don't know what else to tell you mate.

so you're telling me your 7970 has umuch higher bandwith than my gtx 690? I used a gtx 690 on a pci-e 2.0 16x on my i7 950. trust me the 7970 wouldn't even come close in populating an 8x pci-e 3.0 slot

my 7970 is on a pci-e 2.0 16x slot becuase it's an amd system and it outperforms my gtx 680 in some games not to mention it has a lesser cpu

Oh my good God! NO!
What I am saying is:
7970 x8 = 24fps
7970 x16 = 47fps

(Issue found only with FC3 when using High Post FX)

All other games are perfectly fine at x8!

Has any AMD users here downloaded the 12.11 CAP2 beta drivers? If so has anyone seen a noticable performance increase? Sorry if someone has already addresses this but it's a long thread...

I will test the same spot at the top of the tower for you... see how many frames I get.

SO can you repost what settings you were using in that spot?
