I've never tried installing a nonexistent CPU, but it sounds difficult.

You have never opened a cheap laptop then?

Can't come up with decent counter argument, so I'll just tell him to off himself! That'll show him!

No I honestly figured you'd find this a good idea.

Since when were PC's getting smaller, and since when was that an issue? ITX is small enough for pretty much every small PC need, and they still manage to cram full size components (RAM, GPU, etc)

Don't worry. I have my 5 CPUs with 192 cores. Intel might be stupid, but I would still have my processing power.
There could be BGA sockets. And if Intel was smart they would put their higher end desktop CPU's (4+ cores) as interchangeable at bare minimum.

By the time Broadwell comes out the "desktop" as we know it will be a whole new animal, with a whole new pricepoint. IMO I'm glad to see Intel trying to lock down and expand horizontally (which is really more of a defensive move with the way things are going). Means it spurs motherboard makers and programmers to stop basking in the x86 legacy and start becoming more diversified, which will ultimately encourage competition and progress, and commits Intel more heavily to rely on business sales than consumers. Heck even Microsoft, historically their biggest chronie, is increasingly using ARM in their consumer products. Starting to feel there's less downside than first glance points to.

I didn't know they soldered the chips to the laptops; I thought they used a pin system, like with the core 2 laptop processors.

My last laptop's processor was soldered. It was a Toshiba Satellite C655D with a single core processor. I wish I would of picked out the laptop instead of my dad.

Do you really think that such a move isn't inevitable?

This is progress. Stop being so adverse to change.

You're a joke if you think soldering CPUs to the motherboard, removing PCI-E slots and USB ports is a good idea. THIS is NOT progress, requiring a new motherboard every time you want to replace your CPU is stupid, there's very little point to it
