XBOX 360 SLIM questions

Hello, just bought a used xbox 360 250gb slim and I have read about heat problems, scratched disc, and some red ring problem that seems common.

I am curious if I should take this apart and apply some new TIM to the heat sink and maybe upgarde the fan.... ???

Is the red ring problem associated with overheating or there anything else I should do that will make this xbox last a good while..... ???

THANKS!!

I have an xbox 360 slim and it's been running for 2 years straight without any problems. It shouldn't overheat if you don't have any books on the fan opening. From experience I know that people who buy consoles aren't very tech knowledgeable and tend to put them in tiny spaces (I've seen people do that on yt and then say xboxes are crap). If you open and try to mod it then you will just void your warranty so wouldn't recommend doing it.

Thanks noobhell, it appears I have the Valhalla 135w model so that should be the best one right...?

If I bought this used does it still have a warranty..??

warranty only stays with the buyer since you have to register it under your name

I always thought you have 1 year warranty where Microsoft must take it back by law. I don't know how old the xbox is so I can't tell you. The Valhalla model is the newest.

There isn't much point in modding additional cooling with the Slim model. It's cooling is totally sufficient, given that you don't have it encased in a box while running, with shag rug covering all of the vent holes... As far as the other problems you stated: The discs can get 'rings' on them if you bump the console while it's operating. (spinning) Just don't do that and you'll be fine. It doesn't just happen, unless maybe there is some sticky residue on the tray or disc that causes it to 'grip' and mess up. Basically, if you take care of your electronics that will not happen to you. The heat related issues are problems with the older models, not the Slim. You're just fine how it is.

I thought you just needed to provide the serial number for them to make sure it was within the warranty range.

This I would definitely do. When I modifed an old Xbox 360 the amount of thermal paste that covered areas it shouldn't have was shocking.

Also you can never have enough cooling. While the newer slims are much less prone to overheating, expanding the life of the console is never a bad thing. You can also chuck in a fan with an LED on it and make it look twice as cool.

This is a hardware modding/overclocking site. Unleash your inner geek! :D

In regards to warranty, it is with the original owner. In the UK you are covered by the Sales of Goods Act if you buy secondhand (not sure if either apply to Americans or not).
