6950 CrossFire Replacement (Don't Overclock, Refubrished OK)

Hey Gents,

Thought I would get some opinions. I am replacing my current sig-rig GPU setup - basically because I am tired of dealing with games not supporting CrossFire.
Never had microstutter, temperature, driver, or any other problems - just a simple issue of support. I don't blame AMD, but it is what it is.

I would like to upgrade with a future proof card. Probably goign to sell the Twin Frozr II card in the near future, before price drops, since I barely use CF as is.
I game on 1080p, I have no intention of overclocking.

Now my question is - do I sell my cards and upgrade now, or are the new gen cards close enough that waiting is worthwhile (if only so the current gen cards drop in price?).....

If buying now/soon is a good idea, what is a good future proof card to invest in?
Money wise anything up to 450 dollars is good, though if I can get away with cheaper, I see no reason not to.
I don't have an AMD/Nvidia preference, just performance + price.
I have pretty good airflow in my rig, so I am not worried about temps, but a quiet card would be nice.

Specifically I was thinking of getting a refurbished card from the Tegra store on Amazon - I got my 6950 TWIII from then, had no issues for a great price.

Anyways, TL;DR, replacing 6950 CF setup, for a non overclocker, 670, 680, or 7970, and what make?

Thanks in advance,
And Happy Turkey Day!

EDIT: Forgot to add, I play a number of MMOs (World of Tanks, GW2, Planetside 2), the Total War series heavily, among others....

7970 has better price perf ratio than the others, but the 7950 has an even better one. Get something like a gigabyte wind force cooler or such, they're great coolers.

Yeah I have seen some 7950s for really attractive prices.

Tegra is selling a 7950 TF for 250 bucks. I don't want to upgrade anytime soon though, would a 7970 be worth the extra price?
I guess there is no way I am spending less than ~420 bucks if I want a good 7970.

You can't go wrong either way, but I don't think I would want price increases not justified by performance gains with the 7970, people say the gain clock for clock over the 7950 is about 5%. I would probably save the extra money for a better upgrade in the future, and go with the 7950 now.

Ugh, the more I am looking @ that 7950 TW3 for 250, the more I am tempted to grab it.
The price for the performance is just outstanding. Might even tempt me to OC for the first time.

From what I gather, @ 1080p, the 7950 would murder 99% of games on max settings....and like you said, could just save the rest of my money for an 8XXX card if they really happen to kick butt. I would have enough from just selling my current cards....

Bah! smile.gif

why go for a refurbished card. get a new Gigabyte HD 7950 OC for 300 bucks with 3 free games.

www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125414

the HD 7950 is worth every penny. just overclock it to 1.1 Ghz and you match the HD 7970 Ghz. good luck. thumb.gif

Well, I have ordered from Tegra before and been very pleased, so I figured for the money it would be worth it.

Then again, no reason why new would not be preferable, along with Newegg's sexy shipping.

This puppy is 280 after rebate :

Worth it over the Gigabyte and the TF3? The free games are nice, but not as much of a deal-maker for me as silence + performance.

Thank you both for tips!

EDIT: Forgot, I have an Antec 300. Current 6950 is a tight fit, these guys are not much bigger are they ?

see if your case can fit 11.5 inch graphics cards cause the sapphire card is 11.42 inches. the gigabyte is mentioned as 11.4 inches. i would say if you don't have 29cm of space then its a problem. the XFX HD 7950 DD is shorter at 10.5 inches . so if you are constrained for space you consider that model. though i have to say the xfx dd cooler is no match for the gigabyte windforce3x or sapphire dual x coolers.

I checked the lengths, the Gigabyte is only 10mm longer than my current cards, so I should be fine.

Windforce it is then smile.gif .

Now the 8xxx better not make me reconsider my purchase in several months lol.

Bump - I did not end up getting the card due to lack of gaming time.

Now I am looking to buy again- wanted to do a quick check, the 7950 is still a sweet spot? No point in the 660Ti, or going up to 670?
