Upgrading from a HD5850

Thread Starter
Looking to upgrade sometime in the next month or so from an HD5850. I haven't really kept up with the graphics card market, but I was looking at maybe a 670. I play a wide variety of games, from Skyrim to Arma 2 to Borderlands 2 to Minecraft. I'm sure a 670 would be a huge improvement. My budget is kind of limited. I'm hoping to get the best bang for my buck that I can.

Any advice pushing me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well if you can afford a 670, I'd recommend you get a 7950 instead, and overclock it to 7970 performance. Coupled with the new 12.11 drivers, and that thing will zip through any game, on highest settings with ease! thumb.gif

Hmmm, now that's another option. I hadn't even considered an ATI card honestly. I'd heard that Nvidia owns the market lately. I'll look into it for sure. That would also save me some money.

Also, I should mention that I'm also upgrading to an i5 3750k and 8 GB of DDR3, so it'll be basically a total system overhaul. No more Q6600 or DDR2 RAM. Thank god tongue.gif Even though they served me well.

There are a good amount of games that run better on the 7970, which is cheaper than the GTX 680.

BTW, if you are gonna get 8GB of ram, get the Samsung 8GB kit. That is Awesome memory, overclocked mine to 2133mhz on the first try!thumb.gif

The 7970 might be just a bit outside my price range. I'm hoping to spend around $300, $350 max.

Already ordered the G.Skill Ripjaws. They were on for $25 for the 8GB set on Newegg's Black Friday Sale. Couldn't pass them up for that price. redface.gif

If you plan to overclock the video card I would get the 7950. Cheaper then the GTX670 and Overclocks past the GTX670 no problem, stock they are pretty even.

Yeah, I'm starting to lean more toward the 7950. It's cheaper, about the same performance wise, and comes with 3 games I don't have. Looking pretty tasty.
