GeForce GTX 660 or Radeon HD 7850

Thread Starter
Which would you get? I've been an ATI/AMD Radeon user since my gaming days started so it's a dilemma for me, finding it very hard to make a decision. From what I can see the 660 does a tad bit better than the Radeon HD 7850 but which one is better at overclocking?! Ugh, this is painful, really don't want to say goodbye to Radeon. :[
post #2 of 17
If they are at the same price or the GTX 660 is cheaper, get the GTX 660.
If the HD 7850 is cheaper get it and overclock it, it will outperform the GTX 660 while costing lower..
7850 should be considerably cheaper. I'm seeing 7870's that are virtually the same price as the vanilla 660. If anything, try and get the 7870.
which country are you from. because in the US the HD 7870 is selling for the same prices as GTX 660.

660 is simply the better card. its better than both 7850 and 7870 in most games even matching the 7950 in BF3 and crysis 2

you are very wrong. GTX 660 has no chance against a HD 7870. HD 7870 matches GTX 660 Ti.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/11/12/fall_2012_gpu_driver_comparison_roundup/3

Also GTX 660 at stock settings runs at 1033+ Mhz . HD 7850(1 Ghz) will easily match or slightly exceed the stock GTX 660. In fact with voltage overclocking HD 7850 at 1.2 Ghz will be faster than GTX 660 at 1.2 Ghz. GTX 660 performance scaling with overclocking is lesser than HD 7850 which has a 256 bit memory with 32 ROPs. Nvidia's power target restrictions make it even worse.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/09/19/asus_geforce_gtx_660_directcu_ii_overclocking_review/

Getting a factory overclocked HD 7850 like PCS+ HD 7850 (1 Ghz) or MSI HD 7850 PE (950 Mhz) and overclocking with voltage tweaking is the best option. HD 7850(1.2 Ghz) matches or slightly exceeds HD 7870.

I am currently building a new rig for my friend. He is getting a 2GB GTX 660. It helps that his favorite game is Assassins Creed and they are bundling it free at the minute from selected retailers.

Head on over to my post to see his specs if you like. http://www.overclock.net/t/1329829/intel-budget-system

Tom's Hardware is the most recognized reviewer within the community and they rave about the GTX 660. Here is the link to the review http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-660-geforce-gtx-650-benchmark,3297-24.html

I have researched this card over the last few days and the findings at Tom's are pretty much on par with all the other review sites. As most games nowadays are becoming Intel/nVidia optimized I would lean towards the side of compatibility as opposed to awesome frame rates. Fixes for games sooner and less glitches, due to nVidia test beds.

As always AMD has a viable option and shouldn't be discounted. Go with what you want and be happy with it. I am, you only have to read my post and see me stand up to the AMD boys. Its your PC mate.

the 12.11 drivers have improved performance significantly in quite a few games with BF3 being the biggest gainer. older reviews don't have any meaning.

Getting a factory overclocked HD 7850 like PCS+ HD 7850 (1 Ghz) or MSI HD 7850 PE (950 Mhz) and overclocking with voltage tweaking is the best option. HD 7850(1.15 Ghz) matches HD 7870.

This card is alot slower than the GTX 660.

The 7870 is considered a high end card and as such is not really in the correct range to compare. Plus costs more dollar.

Your cards are GTX660 vs 7850, same price bracket, similar performance stats, edge is with the nvidia card by about 30% both at stock.

you are very wrong. clock for clock HD 7850 is 5 - 15% slower than HD 7870 depending on the game. HD 7850(1.2 Ghz) matches or exceeds HD 7870 depending on game. You can get a factory overclocked HD 7850 like PCS+ HD 7850 (1 Ghz) and match the GTX 660. but once you overclock both cards the HD 7850 pulls ahead .

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/09/19/asus_geforce_gtx_660_directcu_ii_overclocking_review/5

"The GTX 660 is not an overclocker’s GPU. It isn't the fault of ASUS however. It is the NVIDIA specified strict limit to the Power Target that is keeping us from achieving good overclocks. If some manufacturer were to come out with a custom GTX 660 that is able to provide us a higher Power Target, we could see some great overclocks out of this GPU. Unfortunately this kind of thing is frowned upon this generation by NVIDIA. NVIDIA is being very strict on the TDP, Power Target, and overvoltage with the Kepler generation. Perhaps NVIDIA is trying to keep RMAs and support calls down compared to the last couple of generations or perhaps going to greater lengths to stratify its product stack? The point is, for us enthusiast overclockers the GTX 660 is one of the most strictly capped GPU generations to date when it comes to overclocking abilities. "

Nvidia really screwed overclocking on GTX 660. As for pricing it depends on region. In the US HD 7870 matches GTX 660 on price but crushes it in performance.
