PCIe16 slot all the same speed?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I've just ordered a GTX680 to go in my machine, I already have a GTX470 which I want to keep, the problem is it's on water and it going to take a while to move down a few slots (can't afford to watercool both at the moment so I don't want to drain the system etc. until I've got a 680 block).

So would it affect the performance running the 680 in slot 2 or 3? and having it power my primary monitor while the 470 runs the other 2? I know RAM slots run at different speeds (although a minor difference).

My motherboard is a ASUS P6X58D

Thanks

The way your board reads out on newegg, it supports 16/8/8 and 16/16/1, so I assume that if you put the 680 into slot 2 it will still run x16, but will default the bottom slot to x1 unless you put another x8/x16 device into it.

No matter where you place the PCI-e cards, the x16 slots will most likely drop to x8 and x8.

I don't think you do know this - all ram slots run at the same speed.

X58 typically has 2x 16 lane slots and 1x 4 lane slot. blue are 16x, white is 4x.

The only reason to move your 470 to another slot is if you want the bios accessible on the 680 - otherwise it makes no difference.

Ok I guess that's why the bottom slot is white instead of blue. I'll see if I can shove it behind the piping and get it into slot 2 wink.gif

Honestly it's too bad they didn't put the white slot in the middle - that would give dual GPU setups much better breathing room.

This is x58, not 1155/6 - X58 has more native PCIe lanes, hence dual GPU @ 16x support.

So it is - and on Asus site as well - the only way to tell if the bottom slot will run at 1x or 8x is to try it and see what GPU-Z says I suppose. I would think it would give it as much bandwidth as possible if you put a card in it --- I would imagine 16x/0x/8x would work, but you'd have to try to be sure. as for 16x/16x/0x, that I'd bet lunch on.

And actually, the more powerful card would benefit from being in the 2nd slot - it'll get better airflow, and therefore have lower temps (assuming you don't throw a waterblock at it).
