installing win8 upgrade?

Okay, so My friend replaced his old broken laptop hd with a newer one in his laptop. it used to run win7. He recently purchased a win8 upgrade. Now, he installed win 8 but its asking for the cd key, he says it didnt work with the win8cd key OR the cdkey from 7 written on the back of his laptop. Any solutions to this? I thought win8 upgrades were allowed if you had 7,even on fresh installs.

The installer has no way of knowing that there used to be a hard drive installed that had Windows 7 on it.  ;)

 

Anyway, here's a site that shows how to perform a clean installation of Windows 8 using the Upgrade version:
