What parts do I need to upgrade on my PC for basic gaming?

I have a Gateway 5453E, which has Athlon 64 X2 Dual core 4200+ 2.2 Ghz CPU, 3Gig Ram, Geforce 6150SE Video card. My children have started playing games like Minecraft, Halo and Chivalry Medieval Warfare. On most of the games, but especially Chivalry, the fps is very low, and there is a lot of lag,
What components do I need to upgrade to at least be able to play some games at the lowest setting?
For sure I think I need a better video card, but have no idea which one will work.
I want to spend the least amount of money possible to get games to run on this computer.
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

P.S. I am in Toronto, Canada.

Well a HD 5570 could be good, they're pretty cheap, or if you try find something second hand a 5750 could also be good.

Also, Minecraft is very CPU dependant, so download the Minecraft mod called "Optifine" and there is an option in it to enable Multi core support, so it'll let you use more than one core of the CPU thumb.gif

Welcome to OCN. Where Overkill is never a bad thing!

I have ran World of warcraft and the new SWTOR on a athlon 64 2500. So most likely you can still push MC and others off of it. So my suggestions are get to 4 gb ram ddr2 (if the board supports it). Win7 64bit home to take full use of 64 bit dual core and all the ram. A new CPU cooler. Nothing fancy, just something big enough to keep temps in the mid 40s to 50s under load. And a new vid card. 400 series nvidia or 5000 series Ati card will do fine to keep low settings.

Others might have better ideas but if your going not want to spend alot of money also. Look into OCN's for sale stuff. could find a great deal on a good mobo cpu ram combo for like 200 or less.

Edit: spelling/grammar

Also forgot to add. You can Overclock your CPU a bit too. To help gain a tad performance without spending anything. But this suggestion is safer when you get a Aftermarket CPU cooler. As the stock one will not do well for it.

I highly doubt he wants to overclock his CPU so the CPU cooler isnt needed, even at stock you don't need one...

I would get some cheap RAM (4GB) and a cheap GPU and call it a day

I have a HD 5450, it's not very good, even on low settings, are you able to find a used 5570 or something like a 8800GT or something anywhere, even on the OCN marketplace?

It would work, but I would aim a little higher.

On the Nvidia side, I would shoot for atleast 96 cores- GT240/GT440/GT620/GT630. Decent performance and will likely work with your existing PSU.
Example: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187188

On the AMD side, look for atleast a 4670/5570/6570
