I can see your logic. The people who make these kinds of associations aren't thinking it though logically though...
If every aspect of every killer's life were analysed in minute detail, there are probably many trends that can be found among them. Perhaps killers have a diet that is particularly high in one or other type of food, perhaps they tend to share a certain type of religious belief, perhaps they all watch a certain amount of television each day and perhaps most of them dislike broccoli..?
The problem is, as you have suggested, that these trends among killers need to be viewed in the broader context of society as a whole. If analysed, no doubt millions of people live a very similar lifestyles to most killers. Most non-violent people (for example) probably eat the same type of food, watch the same television shows, play the same games and enjoy the same sports as the vast majority of killers, but none of those similarities, have made the vast majority of non-violent people, into violent killers.
Perhaps there is something in the mirror neurone theories that can partly explain the (tenuous at best) link between violent video games and real world violence, but as said, if they are solely responsible, society and the world in general will have to change radically before any positive effects could be realised. Also, even if mirror neurones do create a type of trained behaviour, self control would nullify their "training" from ever becoming reality.
The problem is far more complex than these outspoken, anti-violent-video game extremists would suggest. Most of the time however, these people are simply jumping on an opinion poll bandwagon to gain political support among the electorate. If the opinion polls suggested people were concerned about giant, sentient, mutant carrots ruling the world, that would be the issue a lot of these people would be dealing with... Shallow, power-hungry so-and-so's that they are...
