Main reason why I don't build computers for friends... (New)

Thread Starter
This is a thread that I have resurrected due to a new error that I ran into. If you Might know what a NLS Error is please scroll down to the last post. I know that building a computer for a friend and then shipping it is a bad idea now, please don't remind me....

So I set up a build for my friend and it was working like a champ. I had it overclocked and prime stable fro 24hrs. He is not local but was able to play on it a bet before he shipped it back to his home state. I just got a call from him today that it was not booting up. I was able to trouble shoot a lot of the problems over the phone but I can't seem to get it to boot to windows. So far the problems have been:

System Specs:
3770K, Asus P8Z68-V, Samsung 8GB sticks, Samsung 830 SSD with a 1TB WD Black

1) For some reason the computer would not boot and we had to mess around with the MemOK button and reverted the system to the default settings to get it to constantly boot to bios.

2) Trouble shooted the CPU Fan error (H100) I can't see his bios so this took a little time.

3) Computer only sees the WD HDD and not the SSD. We switched the SATA cables on the SSD and HD and unplugged the HD. (Still unresolved)

4) He occasionally gets a SMART error with only the SSD installed.

5) Now his computer starts to boot to windows but it doesn't boot all the way. It freezes at the starting windows screen.

At this time I told him to reinstall windows but it seems that I am the one with the CD and not him so I am going to mail him that. I wanted to walk him through a Live Linux CD boot and see if the SSD was working properly but he is very computer illerate. Is there anything else that you guys might think it is? The only thing I can think of is to reinstall windows on the SSD but it is starting to seem like the SSD went bad and it is only 2 months old. (from purchase).

Any suggestions to help it getting up in running would be helpful. We are both getting frustrated!

I had it overclocked and prime stable fro 24hrs. he is very computer illerate.

VERY bad idea to mix these 2, even if you did the initial setup.

For something like this I would recommend tearing the whole thing down, clearing the CMOS, and rebuilding it again from the ground up and NOT overclocking.
Something that will be very hard to do from a distance.

In my experience this kind of behavior is usually because of a loose connection or something similarly simple

Yes, I know it was a bad idea to begin with. He insisted on it and I thought it was good to go but in the end it wasn't. I had him inside his computer making sure nothing was loose or can out of the socket and I was watching it with Skype. I still think the only thing that might solve the problem is a re install of windows. Any other suggestions?

Also, if the new windows install doesn't work then I am going to have him reset the CMOS. As the board has it now, it is behind his video card (the battery) and I would rather wait and see if the windows install would work than him doing things he is uncomfortable with. We both can wait at this point. The board, as far as I know, does not have a reset CMOS button on it.

Don't ship custom builds.

Or rather, don't let OTHER PEOPLE ship custom builds.

I agree that you'd have the least headaches and most success by going back to defaults and building it back up. Don't overclock without him having at least a basic understanding of what is going on.

I Had a similar situation sometime back, may be the PSU , that would be faulty. Any information for that would further help

Yeah, I know. It was bad to ship it. He played on it and we both messed around with it while he was in town. I want to say the shipping was not the problem but that is what i think it might be. It would be odd though that the SSD would be the only thing that was effected. He paid over $200 for FedEx to pack it and ship it. I was the packaging and was much better than what I would have done.

It seems to boot just fine. I don't think it is a PSU issue.

Here is the post with the orginal parts:

yeah, that is one of the things that I thought it might be. Hopefully once windows gets there we can see if he can just reinstall. Everything was working great before I shipped it. I had been breaking everything in with prime and once it was stable with that I was folding on it 24/7.

Get him to look at all the connections (I suppose you have to tell him where they all are). Considering you shipped I wouldn't be surprised if a cable somewhere at some point came a little loose.

As others have said it was a very bad idea to ship a build, I ALWAYS make sure that if I build a computer for someone it's fairly easy for me to get to them to fix any problems they may be having. (I am guessing you know this now)

Did you set the bios to ACHI mode before isntalling windows 7? If you kept it in IDE mode that could be why the SSD isnt being detected at all. Also if you installed windows 7 in IDE mode and then switching to ACHI after, it will not load and constantly BSOD because it will not have the correct drivers to use ACHI.
