Headphones, Sound Card?

Thread Starter
Budget: $100
I am currently using some 15 year old $5 speakers. I am planning on spending $100 or less on some headphones. I currently am using on-board audio on my SABERTOOTH (Realtek ALC892). Should I spend the full $100 on headphones, or should I look into a ~$60 set of headphones (like the Sony MDR-V6) and a sound card (Like the Xonar DS?)
I will be using it for mostly music, with some gaming thrown in too. I'm not too picky about gaming sound, but I like a fairly balanced sound when listening to music (not too bassy or too shrill). Right now I would either get

Sony MDR-V6 ($50) and an ASUS Xonar DG($25)
or
some ATH-M50s ($105 on Amazon)

Please help?

M50s are bassy, mdrv6s are balanced. The m50s are good but not for your needs.

Ok. I had heard that M50s are some of the best, but I'l take that into consideration. Any thoughts on a sound card?

For music, the mdr v6 are excellent. For games, sr850. But since you don't really mind the game sounds, I say the v6 suits your needs. The asus dg is fine, cheapest card with a built in amp.

Ok. Will the V6 work on an iPhone too? It isn't necessary, but it would be nice. The model is the 3GS.

I appreciate it, however, I would like a headset. I can't blast music through speakers, unfortunately.
I would love to be able to do that though.

Hey, while we're (kind of) on the topic of iPhones, would the CS42L51 be comparable to the CS42L61? The Cirrus CS42L61 is listed under iPhone specs, but it's not on their website. I'm assuming it'll be pretty similar.

EDIT: The CS42L51 has 88mW at 16ohm for 2.5v and 46mW at 16 ohm for 1.8v. Would this translate into about 22mW and 11.5mW respectively? or not?
