The FF error could mean anything, it was basically a fatal flaw (hence FF). It doesn't have to be CPU related.
Check every component is running fine (RAM / GPU / PSU). Then if you can, like you said, slot the CPU into your friends motherboard to see if it works. If it does, your motherboard is broken. If it doesn't, then it's most likely the CPU or the CPU and motherboard.
Also make sure that the CPU has all the pins.

I should get a decent indication of whether the CPU, motherboard or both are dead by putting his working CPU into my (possibly faulty) board and my (possibly faulty) CPU into his working motherboard.
Thanks for the input smile.gif

If it is the motherboard it could be due to 2 things. Either blown VRMs (the MSI 790 series were known for doing this, 4+1 VRMs were very poor for the AM3 wattage hungry CPUs when overclocked). Or excess stress on the CPU socket from a heavy CPU cooler that was knocked about a few times (how mine died).

Uh oh... This could possibly be the problem, I'm using a Thermalright Ultra Extreme CPU cooler.
Will get back to the topic after I manage to test the components at my friends..

Alright I've narrowed the fault down to the motherboard.
Motherboard doesn't do anything with another AM3 CPU in it whereas the CPU boots up fine in another AM3 motherboard.
Not sure what will happen now, hoping to get a refund...
It's a shame though, I was really looking forward to having a play with that system.

Ouch! That sucks, hope you get it sorted out.

You may be able to rma that board through MSI. Go to their website and type in the serial number to see if it is still under warranty. If it is, you may be able to send it in and about 10 days later you will have it back as good as new. I believe that even if it is not under warranty , you can have it fixed for a flat rate of $35.
These boards are great fun to play with, but 2 things they don't get along well with are , overclocked 6 core processors ( vrms tend to go away) and HEAVY CPU coolers. The latter took out my GD 70 (coolermaster N620, weighs about 2 pounds lol).
Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask. smile.gif

It was bought over 3 years ago I believe so no longer under warranty, but I'm quite happy now. The seller decided to give me a full refund smile.gif No money wasted!
