What do RAM speeds and timings do for me? 1600 - 2133?

Hi guys, I'm building a new system and am wondering what faster ram will do for me.

My System:

Intel i5 3570k
AsRock Extreme 4 Z77
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
Corsair Carbide Series 500r
Corsair TX750 V2
Don't know about the video card yet....
Waiting for an SSD sale...(Missed out on a Kingston 3K 120GB SSD for $60 yesterday mad.gif)
Windows 7 Ultimate

Anyway I basically use my computer for:

-Gaming
-Movies
-Internet Browsing
-File Transfer
(But 99.9% Gaming) biggrin.gif

I don't think I need 16 GB of RAM, so I have been planning on buying 8GB

I am currently deciding on my RAM, I have always thought that faster RAM like a 2133MHz speed will allow me to see a noticeable difference in gaming and file transfer. After some research I have learned from others that you don't really see any real world change from 1600 speed ram. One thing I completely don't understand are RAM timings, don't know what they are for, don't know what they do. Anyway, now what really does affect me is the price I pay for my RAM, looking on Newegg for a while I was able to find some extremely cheap G.SKILL RAM:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314

If I were to go with a faster RAM I would have chosen the:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231468

So all I'm asking is will I see a difference with faster RAM if all I do is play games? Will I see a difference if I buy 16GB as opposed to 8GB?

As I recall, timings are the amount of clock cycles it takes for RAM to send data. For example, RAM with a Cas Latency of 9 would take 9 clock cycles before it sends whatever data it's supposed to send.
If you're interested in learning more, there's a fantastic article here.

And no, you won't see a difference unless you somehow manage to use 8GB+ of RAM.

I'd also like to mention to keep compatibility in mind. Due to the height of some heatspreaders, it can cause issues with your heatsink/fan.

Get 16gb of 1600mhz if it's a lot cheaper.

Short answer: ram speed and timings make very little difference to the majority of computing activities.

Long answer: no one will read it.

The difference is very little in real world tasks.

I opted for the 1866 set as I got it for a steal!
