I need help with the minimum psu wattage requirement of a new build I might buy.

Thread Starter
FX-4300 (which I am hoping to heavily overclock, but I've read in charts that the max TDP is 189 watts)
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 Mobo
My overclocked GTX 560 running at 1.1 volts (in use)
8 gbs of Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 2133 ram @ 1.5 volts (in use)
OCZ Vertex 4 128 gb SSD (in use)
SAMSUNG 7200 RPM 500 gb HDD (in use)
Standard 24x Optical Drive

Since the 4300 can get up to 189 watts on load at 5.0 GHz, I need some serious help with psu selection considering my former cpu was only using 80 watts max. The only other thing I know about minimum wattage is that my GTX 560 requires 450 watts minimum.

MY BUILD AS OF RIGHT NOW:

OCZ Fatal1ty 550w Modular PSU
i3-550 OC'ed to 4.2 GHz (on Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus)
ASUS ENGTX 560 DCII OC (running at 970 core @ 1.1 volts)
8 GB's of Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 2133 ram @ 1.5 volts
OCZ Vertex 4 128 gb SSD
SAMSUNG 7200 RPM 500 gb HDD
Standard 24x Optical Drive
ASRock H55M-LE (4.2 GHz comes as a surprize to me as this mobo is not even what people would consider "medium end")
(Don't make fun of me for running a solid budget intel build)

I have put together 2 AMD builds separate from my intel and I have beginner experience with AMD overclocking. This I hope to improve on.

If anyone already has a similar build like the one listed at the top and wants to mabye share theirs, I would be more than thankful to get some suggestions of modular psu's.

You could get by fine on a 600w PSU.
Use this site to calculate PSU wattage requirements,

700w is plenty for what you desire to do, when I owned a 4100, I overclocked that to 4.5, including a overclocked gpu (windforce 7850) and non water cooled setup and it ran perfectly fine, so good, that person I sold it to loves it.

If you are aiming to go lower, say 500w PSU, I recommend you change the gpu to the newer 7000 series from AMD or 600 series from nvidia since that generation seems to nail efficiency. But by the looks of it 560 is what you intend to use smile.gif

Hope that helps.

450-500w should be good enough

a good 450w should be ok

Your existing PSU is fine. It's overkill, you could take on the overclocked 4300 and GTX 560 on a quality 450W. I take on the Phenom II x6 (which consumes MUCH more power than an FX-4XXX) and a GTX 560 Ti on a quality 520W.

Methinks that the 189W reading was taken from software like CPU-Z. This is an estimate, software is never able to provide an accurate wattage reading because there is no way of measuring amperage exactly on motherboards.

600-650w PSU would be perfect fit for you. Plenty of room unless you plan on SLI/CrossFire then go with a 750w. SeaSonic/XFX/Corsair/Antec/Cooler Master/PC Power and Coolings/NZXT/ are the main brands to look for. thumb.gif

650W is what I would reccomend. If you go with a 650w PSU you will not have to splurge a lot to get one that is modular and 80 silver or above rated for efficiency. It will also give you some head room for more fans with LED's, fan controllers, additional drives, that sort of thing. I think that anything over 650W would be complete overkill for your system. I just put my new fully modular Seasonic X Series 650W PSU into my rig today, it cleaned up the wire cluster from the non modular PSU, it looks better, and its more efficient. Cheers.

I ran my FX 6100 at 4.3ghz 1.45v and my GTX 470 1.1mv (4XX series used WAY more power than 5XX) on a OCZ ModXStream 500w with the 990FX UD3 12 gigs of ram at 1.6v and it held up just fine.

You should be set thumb.gif

But heads up, you most likely won't be able to run that Mushkin at 2133 with an AMD setup...
