Need help with 3770k delid :D

Thread Starter
I am planning on deliding my 3770k I need to know what to go with like in terms of paste

Liquid Pro

Liquid Ultra: http://www.amazon.com/Coollaboratory-Liquid-Thermal-Interface-Material/dp/B0039RY3MM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1353811755&sr=8-1&keywords=liquid+ultra

Is the ultra gonna give better cooling?

Which paste will be best for deliding and anyone got any vids i can watch to help me with the process?

What steps should i take to insure its safe?

I havent even put my 3770k in a system yet its still boxed

I am not the tec savy I am having someone build it professionally paying for it, should I see if they can delid it? or should i do it myself before install? just wondering thanks for the help

If you're not tech savvy to the point where you're not building the computer yourself, you probably aren't doing a whole lot that you'd benefit from a delidded processor from anyway. I'd recommend just using it as it comes and not fussing with it. That said, if you REALLY want to do a delid, at least ask the guy who is building the computer if he knows how to/is wiling to do it. It's a risky process especially for a newbie, and a 3770K probably isn't where you want to lose your delid virginity.

Get some already broken processors or old cheap ones to practice on, and just use your rig normally for now. If eventually you build up the confience after practicing, then go for it.

as a side note if I do delid are there any quirky things I need to know like will I have to reapply the thermal paste everyso often? And Is there anyway to get the faceplate (metal plate) back on the chip afterwards and have it stick?

If you aren't tech savvy, then don't bother at all. Deliding your CPU is for pc enthusiasts who want to overclock their CPUs as high as they can go. If you aren't tech savby, then there is absolutely no point in it for you.

I dont think that you should delid it, especially since you are not even building your computer yourself.

You'll just end up with a 300$ paperweight.

Calling someone a fool for offering advice isn't usually a great way to get help.

I KNOW why people delid Ivy Bridge processors. What I'm saying is do you NEED a 5Ghz processor when it comes with the risk of completely voiding the warranty of a $300 processor? (Stupid question I guess this is OCN) If you really think you want to, then at least practice, like I suggested. Unless you're made of cash, then by all means, hope you get lucky.

Well.................... that doesn't mean what you think it does.

There is something called the silicon lottery. Every CPU is slightly different, and it drastically changes the overclocking potential of a chip. My i7 3770K just to boot into windows at 5ghz takes 1.5v. Now I don't care if you are running the worlds best air cooler directly on the die of the cores because at 1.5v, the base of that cooler is going to melt.

You might have a CPU that goes up to 6ghz on 1.3v with a basic air cooler and no deliding, in which case you can probably sell it on ebay for 1000 bucks.

The reality of it is that deliding is usually for people who are sitting at 4.8ghz or slightly higher and they want to shave 15-20C off their load temps. It is not some miracle recipe to get better overclocking potential.

I am gonna try to practice your idea about asking whoever is gonna build it is pretty smart though hopefully they can I mean I just want to hit 5 ghz I know I should have went with Sandy 2700k but the micro center nearby was sold out D:> the 3770k only cost me 229.99 tax 240.99

I mean I heard of some people hitting 5.5 ghz solid and stable with Indigo Xtreme and Liquid Ultra 5.5 ghz on i7 3770k. I heard of i5 3570k clocked at 5.7 rock solid at temps of only 79C-82C max load

I am going to be gaming with 3x 7970s or 8970s(if they are out by the time the build parts are ready) so all overclocking will be great

I understand that but I dont wanna be one of the people stuck at 4.2-4.4 because at 4.5 the ****ty TIM is causing it throttle down. a 4.2 overclock is literally pointless you are gaining next to nothing, at least at 4.8 I could see some improvement but that being said I would be happy with my processor at 4.5 but with 20-30C temp dropped
