As for the board you linked in this post: its chipset is too old for mind blowing overclocks especially with low multiplier processors. And there's the fact the cooling on half of the VRM's is non-existent, further limiting the overclocking potential.
With a quality LGA 775 board you want: 6-8 Phase power (count the number of little gray boxes near the socket, as each one corresponds to a single power phase), heatsinked mosfets (cooler 'fets deliver more stable and overall power, and are more efficient), and LOTS of bios options. Anything high end made by gigabyte, asus, or DFI fits within that category although there are some gems from other manufacturers as well.
Any board with an nvidia chipset is generally not recommended as they are generally more complex and run hotter, limiting their overclockability. They're good for memory overclocking though as they can fully unlink the memory from the FSB.

I know about the power phases but I wasn't too concerned with their cooling because I could always rig up some little heatsinks and fans for them, if need be.

Do you have a specific ASUS P45 that you would recommend (besides yours)

Not particularly. DDR3 boards if you can get them for cheap (unlikely) will basically render ram limitations a moot point though.
Otherwise get any of the ones with decent amounts of cooling (heatpipes and heatsinks on the mosfets), cause you're gonna need it.

I'm not really interested in DDR3 at the moment. I'm right down to the dollar when I'm buying this stuff and I can't afford any more DDR3.

I'll do some looking around and post any boards I have questions about.

EDIT: What's your opinion on this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-P45-NEO2-socket-775-ATI-CROSSFIRE-DDR2-1600-with-i-o-shield-/130811363800?pt=Motherboards&hash=item1e74f701d8

And I don't want to buy this but I just thought it was cool/weird, 8DIMM slots: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-P45-8D-Memory-Lover-LGA-775-Intel-Motherboard-DHL-UPS-3-8-DAYS-/390480193264?pt=Motherboards&hash=item5aea6ee6f0

And I suppose this would be epic (but the shipping is a lot): http://www.ebay.com/itm/DFI-DK-P45-T2RS-Plus-P45-LGA775-DDR2-/110982167835?pt=Motherboards&hash=item19d70d7d1b

I appreciate the response from you, your quite the experienced person with this sort of thing.

Just making sure, P5B DLX = P5B Deluxe? And if that's the case, awesome, I can afford a P5B Deluxe.

Is it safe to say that (all other factors permitting) I could get something like your 5.7GHz E8400 on a P5B Deluxe?

You would have a better chance getting that with a E8500 & P5B.. Pizzaman hit like 628mhz FSB on the P5B-DLX i gave him. E8400 doesnt have the multi.. and your really stretching things on the mobo once you pass ~580FSB [most folks dont get their P45's up past 540FSB..rolleyes.gif].

I recommended the P5B-DLX mainly because it has the power phases to clock Q4's.. will run pretty much all 65nm and 45nm CPU's of the 775 flavor. I is so simple to clock too.. just read up a bit on MCH strapping for 965p chipset.. its not hard to get the hang of.

**Ohh.. make sure to nab a cheap set of Crucial Ballistix.. 800mhz will do fine. They should take you to 600mhz FSB 1:1 no problem.. all the mods for the mobo are listed in the vmod essentials thread here on OCN too. thumb.gif

I need some recommendations for the absolute cheapest, used, 775 board for about $50-$80, possibly $100 if I really need it, on eBay just to get me started. It only really needs support for DDR2 and not really any Core2Quads, just Core2Duo's. I'd prefer not to but I can vmod them if I have to.
I'm open to any and all suggestions!

So all things considered, should I get the P5B Deluxe? I'm thinking yes.

Good to hear the P5B Deluxe will handle anything from P4 to PDC to C2D to C2Q (and maybe my celeron biggrin.gif ). Now about the phases, am I going to need to get some heatsinks on the other power phases that don't have a heatsink?

At the moment I'm gonna pass on getting that ram. Believe it or not but I rigged up a heatsink to a real generic stick of Hynx (CPUZ says Hyundai or something) 800mhz and I can actually run that stick at 600Mhz, I've had it to 608 before so I think that should be fine. http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2550967

I would get it.. as you stated.. it can bench a ****-ton of CPU's..

As for the power phases.. if your freezing CPU's on it.. you dont need heatsinks.. biggrin.gif ..if your trying for high air-OC .. then yes...they can roast.. keep them cool.

**Good to see youve already got some RAM that will get you there.. that is half the battle. You should try to get an E8xxx for your arsenal.. it will help you get to know the mobo's 500-600FSB ranges once you have got the hang of clocking the board a bit.
